USB Camera - ORite VC-2110

Hello,

A friend let me borrow his old camera for some time, and I'm lost about if a) it is going to work with linux b) how to get it working if it does.

The model is an ORite VC-2110 (2.1 Megapixels). Google turns up a lot of pages about this camera, unfortunately they're all in Chinese (I believe the camera is made in Taiwan?), a language I certainly don't master.
I still have to buy an USB cable to connect the camera to the PC, but that seems to be a pretty generic cable.

Does anybody have an idea if I could transfer images/videos from this model to my pc (using linux)? If so, what kernel options/patches do I have do enable/obtain? (In gentoo-sources I only see USB support for Kodak DC-2xx and Mustek MDC800).

Worst case scenario, could I get it working under VMWare?

ManuChao,

I had a look at the spec sheet. That camera only has a 1.3M pixel sensor and its interpolated up to 2.1M pixels. Thats the bad news.

USB cameras often have two data trasnser modes called digital camera and mass storage.

There are certainly some Linux programs that understand digital camera mode. I'll need to do some digging, since I last used them under RedHat and haven't emerged one on Gentoo yet.

For mass storage mode, build the generic SCSI modules, USB stuff and usb-storage. The camera then appears as /dev/sda1, if you don't have any other generic SCSI drives.

The two setting are mutually exclusive (in my HP 310 anyway).

A few 'gotchas' for the unwary.
1. Switch the camera on before you plug it into the USB connector. My camera is very picky about that.

2. With low batteries, the data transfer out of the camera usually fails. the pictures get corrupt over the USB. Its very worrying the first time you see it but the images in the camera are OK.

Seems pretty similar to my old mp3-player. :-)
I'll give it a go with USB-storage (as soon as I make time to buy the cable).

Thanks for the reply, it helped clear things up for me.

It's been a while... And I finally got to test the camera. However, things seem to go funky. Having all modules probed with the camera connected on the USB port (the camera even says "Mass Storage" in its screen), I try to mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/cam -vfat

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/cam -t vfat
mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
And /dev/sda1 disappears. I can get it back doing rmmod usb-storage && modprobe usb-storage, but only to get the same thing later on. I tried using gphoto2/gtkam, but it seems my camera is not supported. Anyone willing to give me a hand?

I've got my USB camera working just fine via /dev/sda1. But some people mount the /proc/bus/usb device instead of /dev/sda1 as in this fstab line:

Code: Select all

none /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs auto,user,devmode=0660,devgid=85 0 0
I don't have this because I don't have "Preliminary USB device filesystem" compiled into my kernel. I know it is a long shot but, if you do have this kernel option set then maybe you need to mount via /proc/bus/usb instead of /dev/sda1.

If that doesn't work then I'd suggest compiling in all of the USB verbose modes you can find to get a better idea of what is failing where.

Thanks for the reply,

You're right, I did have that option enabled in my kernel. I mounted the filesystem/added the fstab line you suggested.

Here's a bit from /proc/bus/usb/devices:

Code: Select all

C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=40 MxPwr= 0mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=09(hub ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=hub
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 2 Ivl=255ms
T: Bus=02 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=01 Dev#= 2 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=0733 ProdID=1310 Rev= 1.00
S: Manufacturer=ViewQuest Technologies Inc.
S: Product=1.3M DigitalCAM
S: SerialNumber=01.00.00
I'm a bit clueless about how to proceed next however. I tried browsing and mounting a variety of subfilesystems. I still have more to investigate...

Stuff I found on google is not that encouraging, however:
http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-usb-u ... 07127.html

Found a driver that frustrated me:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/spca50x/

But is said to support Intel Cameras, maybe I can get my old Intel webcam working for the time being.

I'll keep trying, thanks
