Vmware uses a virtual scsi device - so either compile scsi into your kernel or chane vmware to use ide

also make sure you have the module for the fs you are using compiled into your kernel, and make sure the boot loader is pointing at the right partition etc....

You'll have to expicitly compile support for scsi and especially the buslogiq controller. I had the exactly same problem.

And if you're having problems with the NIC, this worked for me (i'm happy right now!!).
1) Reconfigure kernel, module support for "AMD pcnet32"
2) make modules modules_install
3) modprobe pcnet32
4) /etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart
5) dhcpcd eth0
6) works!
My VM is set to NAT in VMWave btw.
