i had many similar issues yesterday while compiling openoffice... if only portage where a tad more intelligent...
anyways, what i did was... update your system emerge -avuD --newuse world. then try again.
and keep trying the use of USE="-something" as you can.
i tweaked it little by little and got it all installed in the end ;)

btw:
net-dns/avahi is missing the mdnsresponder-compat feature means you got to reinstall it with some use flag, i would assume "mdnsresponder-compat" use flag... but check it out here: http://gentoo-portage.com/USE
find the package and see which use flags set what feature.

cheers and good luck.

That should be satisfied by dev-python/dbus-python which should have been installed by that point to satisfy the dependency on it, which might be worth investigating.

Thanks for the help guys. that got past that issue, but emerge -uDN only almost worked. There's still one problem left. Here's the error message:

Well, you have a lot of problems here.

First of all, when a package complains about a needed USE Flag, please add it into /etc/make.conf for global, or in /etc/portage/package.use for a single package. If you do a "one shot" with the USE Flag enabled, the package will be rebuilt without the USE Flag on the next update, and things will break ;)

Code:
echo "net-dns/avahi mdnsresponder-compat" >> /etc/portage/packages.use

But let's start by the "end" : Your OpenOffice build problem. Your system miss having a JAVA compiler set.

Code:

eselect java-vm list
eselect java-vm set system [number of your choice]
emerge -uNDav world

Good luck !

Thanks for the help guys.

jeanfrancis: i added the use flag to package.use as you said and eselect says sun-jdk 1.6 is the current system java compiler:

Code:
eselect java-vm list
Available Java Virtual Machines:
  [1]   emul-linux-x86-java-1.6
  [2]   sun-jdk-1.6  system-vm

However, the same error keeps popping up. It hasn't changed anything. Thanks for all the help though guys.

emerge --info please ?

When you talk about the "same errors", you talk about the OpenOffice compilation problem ?
