Why is it sooo very big, even if just some apps has been started (700MB idle could be true)...?
Just read about kde4: it was reported to use < 200 idle. |

probably they mean 32bits...what do u have 64bits?
but if you dont like those kde/gnome stuffs use fluxbox or xfce...with these and 32bits you can take it down to ~80MB idle _________________ ~x86

then i think 700mb is too much for an idle 32bits system...but dunno why though
P:S
32bits use less RAM where 64bits uses almost double the amount...atleast to my knowledge he _________________ ~x86

How are you measuring your memory usage? You want to be using 'free'. Post the output of the command. |

You definitely don't want to use free, top, ps, etc. as the information these tools provide are misleading, to say the least. Read this text how to obtain useful data.

No, it's not "really" true. The tools you've used are likely the insufficient ones above. It's lower because of shared memory listed multiple times. There's also a lot of caching going on, caches which mostly can be discarded, if the memory is needed for other tasks. It would not be smart not to use all the memory you have available. _________________ Please make sure that you have searched for an answer to a question after reading all the relevant docs. |
