Why is it that the loopback device is not to be found in the in-kernel alsa drivers? Am I looking in the wrong place? I would assume that in the menu config it would be listed under "Generic Drivers".
Do I have to switch to the alsa-drivers package if I want a loopback device?

No, SND_DUMMY is just a dummy device mainly used by developers for testing. I need SND_ALOOP. It creates a virtual device that loops back what is being played back on the soundcard so that it can be recorded. I know I can get it if I build ALSA separate from the kernel as modules, but I would think it would be just as easy to compile it directly into the kernel.
