ok I've searched the fourm - read the post but I still don't

understand. I installed my CD-RW and DVd drives I can mount both of them I can burn cd's with my writer I can view files with both drives BUT I can't figure out how to set up my DVD to play movies with xine. what do I put in my fstab and in my grub - menu.lst? I already have the CD/rw as hdc=scsi in the grub - menu.lst.

Do you have UDF support compiled into your kernel? There is a thread somewhere that mentions it as being required to play DVDs.

also what does devfsd.conf point to for your dvd....what i did since my dvd is in essence my cdrom0 is to uncomment the dvd section under devfsd.conf and then change it to point to the cdrom0:

yeah i i kinda knew what yours looked like....lol

so is your dvd also your cdrom0? prolly is so just change all the refferances cdrom1 to cdrom0 under the /dev/dvd section

ok I got xine to see my dvd drive, but when I try to play the disk I get this error..

try hitting nav then waiting a second and hitting play....see if that does any better

You could try using mplayer instead.

-Make sure you've got 'dvd' as one of your USE flags in '/etc/make.conf'
-Emerge mplayer
-Play your DVD with (mplayer -dvd <title no. to play>)

I think that 'should' work, if not I've prabably forgotten something really obvious.

i have mplayer but i dont care for it that much...try to get xine working first before you try another player.

I quite agree. I certainly wasn't suggesting that you give up on Xine. I prefer it to mplayer myself and will probably go back to it once there's a xine-ui ebuild that compiles with gcc 3.1. Just thought I'd suggest a temporary alternative if Xine continues to give you trouble.

yeah I like xine better but I'll try mplayer. I did click on nav but it didn't work I tried all the buttons but the same error

Alot of people have had this problem I've noticed looking at different fourms. Here is a copy of a post sent on the alt.os.linux.mandrake newsgroup. Hope this helps some people. I havn't tried this myself.

No, its the other way round. The DVD manucacturers encrypt the DVD so
it will only play back on a DVD player in one particular area of the
world. For instance US DVDs will not play in Europe, so we Brits
cannot buy US DVDs and play them in the UK. WinDVD works the same way.
The encoding is known as CSS. However, there has been an open source
program known as DeCSS which runs on Linux which will enable DVDs from
ALL regions of the world to play on a Linux box, and clearly the DVD
industry doesn't want this.

Recently, there was a successful case against a New York magazine which
was prosecuted for printing the code as it was held to be a tool for
facilitating copying and therefore contravening copyright. Since then,
a number of people in the UK have been threatened with legal action and
at least one has withdrawn the code from his website.

It terms of xine, it is the xlibdvdcss-1.2.1 which facilitates the
playing of encrypted dvds (I understand) but it needs the
xine_d4d_plugin actually to play them.

I did what rommel said after hitting nav wait a few seconds and to get my xine to see my dvd I edited grub menu.lst and added hdd=scsi.

now how do I change the aspect ratio? I notice that a part of the movie is cut off
