I installed Firefox by downloading it from their website and it kept crashing; I removed it an replaced it with the version through portage (firefox) and it also keeps crashing.

It is particularly vulnerable, it seems, when checking out Gmail, but I have not yet found a consistent pattern - it crashes always after using it for a few minutes.

When starting from a terminal (I usually do), there are no error messages - just a segmentation fault.

One issue might be that the computer is slightly old - most components are from 2002.

I am a little clueless as to where to search for a problem - anyone any suggestions? Specific types of log files I should check? Some way of getting more information on what causes the crash? I'm happy to spend some time researching this, but just need a hint as to where to start looking :) ...

try disabling plugins, changing themes and removing previous installation config and profile file.

if it wont help you, try building firefox using safer cflags.

I'm having firefox crashing too.
I tried to install firefox-bin-3.0.6. Tried running it in safe mode in a clean X session:
Code:
export DISPLAY=:0
X&
firefox-bin -safe-mode

I tried clearing the ~/.mozilla folder too.
All the plugins, extensions, themes and Javascript are disabled.

It crashes opening this url: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Intrepid_ru
An interesting moment is that not only FF itself crashes, but the X server too.
firefox's console output has nothing interesting in it, just the message that X server is down.

Xorg.0.log contains no clues:
Code:

Backtrace:
0: X(xf86SigHandler+0x85) [0x80ceb23]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

emerge --info is as follows
Code:

Try running an strace on firefox... this is the best way to get good debugging info out of firefox.

Did that. Nothing interesting. I ran strace firefox-bin -safe-mode 2>log
Loaded troubling page in a new tab, then copied log to log.before, than switched firefox to that tab, it crashed.
diff log{,.before} gives the following

Yeah, it does look like maybe X is the problem. Are you having problems running any other apps... namely anything graphically intensive?

Have you done any hardware or software updates recently?

I don't run graphically intensive applications frequently.
I had problems with Google Earth 4 crashing, but this seems to be a common case, I didn't solve this, but upgrade to the 5th version helped.

Among other apps I ran Quake III Arena just for testing and it operates perfectly, so did I play recently-added-to-the-portage WorldOfGoo-Demo =)

Updates, hmm, I don't think that this information is helpful as I haven't experienced FF crashes until today and I have never visited the mentioned above "X" page before, and there are no other pages I discovered to cause crashes.

A bit of specifics on my system that might provide some clues:
I have nvidia driver and a TwinView dual-head setup. Haven't tried unplugging one of the monitors yet, should I?

Any ideas?
I'm confused now on where to file a bugreport.

Now I discovered than the Main page http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Main_Page doesn't cause FF to crash, but
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Fedora_fc5 — another "bad" page.
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Mandriva — this one is "good".
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Alternatives

The obvious difference is that "bad" pages are noticeably bigger. But I'm sure that I had no problems loading even huger pages, the ones that cause firefox to "hang" for a while to display them.

Ya know, I've recently had this problem too...with 'big' pages. I even got a core dump, because I had one page that I was reading that was very large and took a long time to load. The stack trace pointed to flash as the culprit. You have flash installed?

Yes, I do have Shockwave flash 10.0 r15 installed, but I tried turning it off.
I ran FF in safemode plus disabling everything I saw in the settings and add-ons dialogs.

But these "bad" pages do have flash inside...

If it's any consolation :( I have the exact same problem with that page. I had noticed a couple of times in the past few days this happening, but don't recall what page was causing the problem.

I'm using an ATI Radeon PCI card, so quite different there.

Yes, that russian ubuntu page blew up for me. Like I said, the stack trace from the core dump I have points to flash, but if flash is disabled, then it may not be a flash issue. The page that crashes FF for me is very heavy in flash...lot's of flash embedded.

Do you have the same results on every link I posted? I mean, do "green" ones load correctly?
What is your RAM amount? Mine is 2GB/1.44 free when reproducing the bug.

Well, this one loads perfectly for me, however, I haven't noticed that it is heavy in flash. About 4 videos and a tiny banner on the right. Anyway, it works for me.

Just a wild guess about it being russian, of course :D

For me it takes a little while...scrolling up and down, but it always crashes. Anyway, I do think this is flash related based on the stack trace I captured. The flash version we are both using is alpha after all, and flash has never been known for it's stability on linux anyway, though with this exception, it has worked pretty well for me thus far:

(sorry, don't have debugging symbols compiled in, but it looks pretty obvious from this)

Just to be sure, do you get the X server itself crashed, or FF leaves it alone?
Also, does disabling flash make the problem disappear?

Just tried to disable the flash 10 plugin, and re-enable the 9 one - same problem.
(the entire X server goes down)

Disabling flash does make the problem disappear and it does not crash X, only FF.

Just as I thought, it seems that we have different issues, but tutaepaki's one is the same as mine.

Have you tried falling back to a previous version of flash player?

I'm stuck with the current version because it's the only one that natively supports 64 bit. So far, I've only noticed this problem on a few pages though...so, I'm basically living with it until an updated Flash version comes out I suppose.

Well, let's investigate further =)
Which versions of X server do you have?
I have xorg-x11-7.2.

I suppose we should wait for the ones who know at least where we should file a bugreport as I don't have enough experience doing that.

A few questions:

- Do all the bad pages have Russian fonts?
- Does this only affect firefox or does konqueror (for those of you with KDE) also crash?
- Does this only affect firefox 3.0.6, or does the same happen with 3.0.5?

One time in the past firefox kept crashing for me and it turned out it was due to a bad font arphicfonts package.

(BTW - I'm a little nervous to check the page myself in case there is something nefarious going on...)
