how to list files belonging to a package?

Hi guys,

Just got my Gentoo system up and running.. it's sweet and a fabulous piece of work - I MUST THANK THE DEVELOPERS !

I'm used to deb and rpm package handling - and I often use a function that shows me the list of files belonging to a certain package. with rpm I would do rpm -ql <packagename>.

How do I do this with portage? It must know, since it can unemerge a package.
Best regards,

You need to first emerge gentoolkit. Then you can do one of the following:

Code: Select all

epm -ql <package_name> #list files in package
epm -qf <file_name> # list package a file belongs to
epm -qa # list all installed packages
qpkg -l <package_name> #list files in package

Great. I like that they took the -q options that RPM uses - makes it easier to remember, when you already know RPM :-)

Now I only need to find out, if emerge can tell, if any packages depend on it being installed - so I can tell if I can safely uninstall it - or upgrade it without troubles.

Right, reverse dependency tracking is a big feature that has been on the list of things to-do for quite some time. We're expecting it Real Soon Now (TM). :D

It's a big task, but the developers know that it needs to get done. Some were hoping for it to make it into Portage 2, but it's a little late for that...
I don't believe in witty sigs.

Thankyou.

Looking forward to it being part of the portage DB - to speed things up :-)
