PostPosted: Tue Jul 15, 2008 2:52 pm    Post subject: Up arrow acting as a keyboard short cut [SOLVED] Reply with quote

Hi,

it never happened before but when I had suddenly hard reboot and when I am back in the OS and press Up Arrow in the keyboard, then the Save Screen shot windows pops up. I did not set this short cut but it appears this hard reboot did something weired.

Any ideas ?

Thanks a lot

welcome to world of HAL, EVDEV and newer xorg!!

Just go to control-center (KDE or gnome) and deselect any keyboard layout that you have selected there.
Let evdev manage your keyboard with device section having evdev as the driver instead of the kbd in xorg.conf. Restart X.

but when I made those changes, startx did not start gnome-session instead just gave a blank screen with "X" in it.

I also forgot to tell that when I tried startx with above xorg.conf then , it obviously did not accept any keyboard input to kill using <CTRL ALT BKSP> so I used CTRL ALT DEL to reboot as rebooting is the only way left for me then.
Thanks :)

In xorg.conf

I changed
Code:

Section "ServerFlags"
   Option       "AIGLX" "off"
    EndSection

to
Code:

Section "ServerFlags"
   Option       "AIGLX" "off"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
EndSection

then
Code:
startx

now Up arrow is not popping up with SNAPSHOT window

welcome to world of HAL, EVDEV and newer xorg!!

Just go to control-center (KDE or gnome) and deselect any keyboard layout that you have selected there.
Let evdev manage your keyboard with device section having evdev as the driver instead of the kbd in xorg.conf. Restart X.

If that's the supposed way to do it, how can one change keyboard layout per user and/or needs? For example I am often changing between de and us layouts.

Well, if by 'change keyboard layout per user' you meant something like what
'Option "XkbLayout" "us,de"' was doing (or however was that spelled in xorg.conf),
you can set those options in the fdi file, too.

I mean keyboard switch on the fly. whenever I want. for example in gnome/kde. for a user that doesn't know how to handle config files, and doesn't have the rights to alter xorg.conf.

Depends what you mean by "on-the-fly".
If "going to the desktop keyboard configuration applet" that should still work.
Otherwise you just need to check what options you should set in the fdi,
if you have a string with multiple keyboard layouts, it think some default key combo
is assigned (though I may be wrong, I never needed another layout)

If you say that "going to the desktop keyboard configuration applet" works, I'm fine with it. But devsk mentioned that keyboard layouts should be disabled. That's why I wondered.

I said "I think it should work".
I'm not on a desktop env that has such n applet,
but as long as keyboard model in that applet is set to "evdev managed" it should
not cause a conflict.
