Since the last time Stella updated in portage (from 2.5.1 to 2.6.1) I've been getting pretty much static for sound. I'm not sure if it's something broken with Stella itself, the ebuild, or what. With the .stella settings folder deleted so I'm on the 100% default settings the sound is that way and there's seemingly nothing I can change in the audio settings screen to make the sound work right. I've tried just about every setting in the frequencies, fragment size, volume etc, and have only succeeded in making the static noise sound different.

Info about my system:

gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r5, alsa compiled in-kernel, Creative Audigy 2 ZS soundcard

USE flags for stella and for SDL since I think that's what it uses for sound:

stella: Relevant USE flags: (opengl)
libsdl: Relevant USE flags: (X) (-aalib) (alsa) (-arts) (-custom-cflags) (-dga) (-directfb) (-esd) (-fbcon) (-ggi) (-libcaca) (-nas) (-noaudio) (-nojoystick) (-novideo) (opengl) (-oss) (-svga) (-xinerama) (xv)

Yeah, I installed it with Paludis but I did so with the last version too.

Having the same issue here. Not sure what's wrong / what changed. I tried installing the older version in Portage and that didn't fix anything. Tried recompiling the SDL stuff with -custom-cflags and no luck there either.

Under the loud distortion I can hear the right sound effects. not sure what's going on. xmess.SDL , which also uses SDL, seems to be working fine.

EDIT: It has been reported on the Stella mailing list as well:

Yep, that was me on the mailing list lol. It probably happened with some recent update of libsdl. I guess we'll just have to wait for it to get fixed in stella. In the meantime you can emulate atari 2600 with sdlmess if you don't mind not having a gui. It's also not in portage unfortunately.

The loud buzz also happens on my 64-bit Fedora 9 with Audigy 4 soundcard, in case that helps. Other games are fine.

gcc version 4.3.0 20080428

$ rpm -qa | grep -i sdl
SDL-static-1.2.13-3.fc9.x86_64
SDL-1.2.13-3.fc9.x86_64
SDL_image-1.2.6-6.fc9.x86_64
SDL_sound-1.0.1-9.fc9.x86_64
SDL-1.2.13-3.fc9.i386
SDL_mixer-1.2.8-8.fc9.x86_64

I'd also like to mention that xmess is in portage... but the whole xmess/xmame project has been dead for nearly two years now so it's actually 20 versions behind sdlmess.

It's not as easy as using stella's gui but if you want to try sdlmess it's pretty straightforward once you get it compiled. I just compile it and run it from my home directory.

Optional:
Code:
./mess -createconfig
Then edit the mess.ini file to change settings.

To play 2600 roms:
Code:
./mess a2600 -cart ~/romdir/rom.a26

However, I'm still hoping that this issue with Stella gets fixed because it's probably still the best 2600 emulator.

Are people still having this same issue now? Because I've completely reinstalled Gentoo since my last post in this thread, and it still makes that really loud hum/buzzing sound.
