PostPosted: Tue Jun 10, 2008 10:27 am    Post subject: Why won't kdm work? Reply with quote

Hello,

Does anyone know why kdm won't work on my system? I've followed the manual, and I've been googling around for days, but I can't find anything to help. Here's my /etc/conf.d/xdm file:

Code:
# We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you have't accidently configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.
CHECKVT=7

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | kdm-3.5 | kdm-4.0 | en$
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.
# KDE-specific note: kdm-3.5 and kdm-4.0 are just examples. You will find all
# possible versions by looking at the directories in /usr/kde/.
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

And here's my /etc/rc.conf file:

Code:
# /etc/rc.conf: Global startup script configuration settings

# UNICODE specifies whether you want to have UNICODE support in the console.
# If you set to yes, please make sure to set a UNICODE aware CONSOLEFONT and
# KEYMAP in the /etc/conf.d/consolefont and /etc/conf.d/keymaps config files.

UNICODE="yes"

# Set EDITOR to your preferred editor.
# You may use something other than what is listed here.

EDITOR="/bin/nano"
#EDITOR="/usr/bin/vim"
#EDITOR="/usr/bin/emacs"

DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

# XSESSION is a new variable to control what window manager to start
# default with X if run with xdm, startx or xinit.  The default behavior
# is to look in /etc/X11/Sessions/ and run the script in matching the
# value that XSESSION is set to.  The support scripts are smart enough to
# look in all bin directories if it cant find a match in /etc/X11/Sessions/,
# so setting it to "enlightenment" can also work.  This is basically used
# as a way for the system admin to configure a default system wide WM,
# allthough it will work if the user export XSESSION in his .bash_profile, etc.
#
# NOTE:  1) this behaviour is overridden when a ~/.xinitrc exists, and startx
#           is called.
#        2) even if ~/.xsession exists, if XSESSION can be resolved, it will
#           be executed rather than ~/.xsession, else KDM breaks ...
#
# Defaults depending on what you install currently include:
#
# Gnome - will start gnome-session
# kde-<version> - will start startkde (look in /etc/X11/Sessions/)
# Xfce4 - will start a XFCE4 session
# Xsession - will start a terminal and a few other nice apps

XSESSION="kde"

I have tried replacing "kdm" with "kdm-3.5.9" and "kdm-3.5" but to no avail.

Thanks in advance.

Hi muhsinzubeir,

I've done exactly what you posted there, but the result is the same. There is no error message. At the end of the boot, the following messages appear on the screen:

Service xdm started
Service local started

I'm then confronted with a console instead of kdm. Actually, I don't mind typing startx myself, but my wife won't like it at all! She'll also not appreciate having to change to root to be able to switch the computer off - that's why I want to get kdm working.

Ha! What a coincidence! Nice to know I'm not the only one with this problem! I don't want to hijack your post there, sall, so I'll keep this one open. Ok asks you to do emerge -pv kdm. When I do that, this is what I get:

Code:
pc1 james # emerge -pv kdm

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/kdm-3.5.9  USE="pam -arts -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -xinerama" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

muhsinzubeir, I'll try commenting out the DISPLAYMANAGER line in /etc/rc.conf and I'll post what happens...

OK - I commented out the line but the result is the same. Kdm still doesn't start - and the messages are exactly the same.

Code:
cat ~/.xinitrc | grep exec startkde

Mmm...something not right:

j
Code:
ames@pc1 ~ $ cat ~/.xinitrc | grep exec startkde
grep: startkde: No such file or directory

I should perhaps add that I didn't originally have a ~xinitrc and I made it myself. Here is the contents:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
exec startkde

OK - I was wondering if there was a typo. I was actually just editing my last post while you were telling me that you'd made a typo. Anyway:

Code:
james@pc1 ~ $ cat ~/.xinitrc | grep exec
exec startkde

mmh everything looks properly set in terms of config files...what do u get with :
Code:
rc-update show | grep xdm

P:S
Just to confirm that xdm is on the default runlevel, but im hoping its there.The last place to check for errors woud be /var/log/Xorg...that is for your X.
Sorry couldnt help much on this one, but atleast i tried hope u get around it soon.

There's a kdm log file in /var. Looks interesting:

Apparently there's a problem in xorg.conf. I'll look into it...

Your /etc/rc.conf file is not correct.
At the bottom it should read
Code:

XSESSION="kde-3.5"

You may consider this nitpicking but it's probably why it doesn't work.
Gerard.

Well now, here's an interesting idea. What do you think? I actually copied my xorg.conf file from Debian and pasted it into /etc/X11 in Gentoo. Idiot that I am! There are fonts and other stuff that aren't on Gentoo. Here's the file:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder3) Tue Jan 22 19:53:46 PST 2008

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I'm wondering whether this explains two problems I'm having: 1) the kdm problem, that I'm posting here 2) the general performance problem that I've posted here

Gerard: I'll try out your suggestion in a minute. Right now I'm re-compiling my kernel as I've just noticed that I haven't build in the soundcard. I'll post as soon as I've tried.

it could be but setting the X server is well explained on the gentoo official docs.click here

PS
Somebody noticed something on the kde-<version>.I always use autogenerate then move to nvidia documentation to customize it a little bit.

Edit
Definately that xorg.conf will give you headaches, please refer to the official gentoo docs for configuring X :D

Well never mind.
I tried it in my /etc/rc.conf but it doesn't matter.
Probably only needed when you have 2 slotted kde's.
I think you need to make a new xorg.conf the Gentoo way.
Gerard.

My rc.conf file had the following comment in it (2008.0beta2).

# DISPLAYMANAGER has moved to /etc/conf.d/xdm

Putting gdm in the display manager line in /etc/conf.d/xdm and running "/etc/init.d/xdm start" worked for me. Should be the same for kdm.

Be sure to comment out the DISPLAYMANAGER line in rc.conf too.

Sorry Gerard: specifying kde-3.5 didn't work. I'll get onto redoing xorg.conf the Gentoo way as soon as poss and I'll post once it's done. I can't remember why I copied over the Debian file - oh, yes I do! I had problems with the Gentoo way: the xorg file wasn't created. I was very tired at the time and I just wanted to get everything finished. Ah well, that's what happens when you work on something when you're in a bad frame of mind. I'lll learn one day!

OK, I've reconfigured the xorg file the Gentoo way. However, kdm still doesn't start :(

There's Xorg.log in var.
But there's also kdm.log.
What is their output?
Gerard.

I am puzzled by this line in kdm.log:
Quote:
Parse error on line 1 of section (null) in file //xorg.conf

I think there's something messed up real bad.
You might consider a re-install by the book.
That will be quicker than chasing all these errors.
Gerard.

i think you are still facing X-server troubles rather than kdm...login manager correctly set i think to my knowledge.Normally system fails to load xdm/login manager if there are issues with X.Thats normal...happens all the time in for instance if you build a kernel en forget to build modules like nvidia-drivers.Then the system will leave you console to figure out the rest....

"(B)07[?47h[?25h===" is not a valid keyword in this section.

Lines like this shows that syntax errors on the file xorg.conf i.e means some stuffs on this file aren't recognized en need to be changed.

P:S
-Uninstall X en follow the guide to configure X freshly started making sure that your old xorg.conf is deleted.Be sure to have graphic card drivers installed as well by following official guides like nvidia or so.
-OR start with fresh install if you think chasing down errors would cost more time than re-install.

good luck...

Edit:
Do you have a section called null on your xorg.conf?....

A quick howto:
Code:
echo "VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia"" >> /etc/make.conf
{assume you have nvidia}
Code:
Xorg -configure
{auto-generate xorg.conf works most of the time}
Code:
 X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
{test the new file...u should GUI with nothing now}
Code:
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
{copy the new file to its location}

official howto
