This has been extensively discussed many times here. A quick search will show some results. Locking.

saw somem talk in #gentoo about precompiled binaries just wondering what everyone else thinks of haveing the option to install a precompiled binary for your arch. I think its not a bad idea ... i personally like to roll my own but some people may like to mix and match .... especially for the bigger apps. I would be willing to roll out packages from my default arch config. so what do you all think about precompiled bin option?

A major part of Gentoo is downloading the sources and compiling them on your machine.
I'd rather see the dev team work on other things than maintaining binaries, but that's just me.
