Hello. I've been having this very strange problem since a couple of days ago. Every application complains that it can't open the audio device. However, the flash player still works fine and when I visit youtube or last.fm I can hear everything. As usual, I did a --update world recently, but I didn't notice any other problems. I have gnome installed.

Any clues? =P

Are you on AMD64 and using nspluginwrapper?

Try this too:

Take a look:
Code:
lsof /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*
fuser -v /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*

Yes, I am on AMD64, but I don't have nspluginwrapper installed. Here's the output of the fuser command:

Code:

                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   arthur    25953 F.... firefox-bin

and, indeed, when I close firefox the sound starts working again! The strange thing is that if I open a firefox window it
will block the sound after opening youtube, and it will remain blocked until I quit. If I don't open youtube at all (or any
other site with sound) there's no problem.

It's a slightly different, but I suspect is the same problem, you might want to try this solution, and upgrade to app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs-20080418 and report back if that fixes it, as I suspect that it is due to the 32bit version of flash.
