I recently reinstalled Gentoo after a hard drive failure, and now ALSA is dying after playing a few seconds of scratchy-sounding audio (pops, clicks, etc.) from mplayer. The first attempt, where mplayer plays for a few seconds and then freezes:

Amarok and mpg123 work fine before using mplayer, but not after:
