i get this when i'm running an ALSA apps. that's working before :
Code:

ALSA lib dlmisc.c:118:(snd_dlsym_verify) unable to verify version for symbol _snd_pcm_plug_open
ALSA lib pcm.c:2108:(snd_pcm_open_conf) symbol _snd_pcm_plug_open is not defined inside [builtin]

somebody got something similar ?
the soundcards are reconized by the kernel, but i can't open alsa system...

i have build alsa drivers into the kernel not into modules.
as i read some others pages, it's seems alsa-lib that need ALSA-PLUGINS...
but i don't need one of theses, is there a default one to output sound ? is it really necessary to use new alsa ?

ok well i founded a better way to resolve this.
first i have checked the ALSA version from the kernel, it is the 1.0.15
so i was need to mask all alsa relative packages that i had installed (alsa-lib, alsa-headers, alsa-utils)
and unmask the 1.0.15 version of theses packages (a chance that there are still ebuild of theses versions) to match the alsa-driver build into the current stable vanilla-kernel in the portage tree.

After rebuild, the alsa-lib complain about ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS that are empty in the /etc/make.conf
so i have added some plugins relative to my error (empty plug null adpcm file).

after this my app (and aplay) is working as usual..

so question now : why do i need to add these to listen simply songs with a simple alsa code.

That worked for me too ciberfred!
I'm using the kernel: 2.6.24-gentoo-r8, not the vanilla, but this gentoo one also have that version trouble.
And worked masking all >= 1.0.16 and unmasking 1.0.15 for ~amd64 the three packages you said, as you described.
I didn't need the ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS in make.conf.

So thank you very much!

I'm using the kernel modules with 2.6.24-r8, all of my alsa packages are 1.0.16 and it works without any problems

here are my plugins: ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="multi asym rate dmix dshare dsnoop softvol plug extplug ioplug hooks empty route file"
