A USE flag is on and I can't figure out the correct way to switch it off.
Code:

# emerge -up world
[ebuild  N    ] x11-libs/libXScrnSaver-1.1.2  USE="-debug"
[ebuild     U ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc2_p26753 [1.0_rc2_p25993] USE="xscreensaver*"

OK, so that is easy to understand. Mplayer now makes use of the xscreensaver USE flag which it believes is set. But, as it happens I don't want xscreensaver, so therefore I need to switch off this USE flag (that, after all is the power of Gentoo).

Problem. According to both profuse and ufed, 'xscreensaver' is NOT set. Accordingly, they are not prepared to switch it off. I can manually add '-xscreensaver' to /etc/make.conf, but as soon as I use profuse to change any other USE flag it gets removed again and xscreensaver is back on. I could add an entry in /etc/portage/package.use, but that doesn't seem to be fixing the heart of the problem.

So, bottom line, why does emerge think that xscreensaver is set whilst profuse and ufed both think that it is not?

Thanks

Take a look at mplayer-1.0_rc2_p26753.ebuild, it uses EAPI="1", and in IUSE in specifies whether or not certain use flags should be enabled if they're not already explicitly set or unset by the user in make.conf or package.use.

xscreensaver, along with numerous others, is "+xscreensaver" which enables it, and others such as jpeg and png are "-jpeg -png".

This is useful mostly for newer users who haven't really customized their use flags, so the devs can specify cetain use flags on a per ebuild basis.

You should probably just add it to package.use, at least until the portage utilities you're using (profuse and ufed) are updated to be compatible with EAPI 1.

There could already be an ~arch version with the required changes...

ufed-0.40-r9 has no problems to set "-useflag".
