Did you run winecfg? I did run that and used the "automatic" button, can't remember what it was called. |

I removed the .wine folder, changed the cdrom link as you suggested and ran winecfg with autodetect. I tried this both as a user and as root.
I am wondering if the problem was related to my having a second (non HD) dvd drive at /dev/hdb, and/or a 64 bit install. |

I have a 64-bit install too and that sounds like the same stuff I did. |

Strange.I wonder if there is something wrong with my setup.
I am soon going to do a complete clean 64bit install to start looking at the Nvidia vdpau patches and to keep it separate from my 'production' system. I will try again with that.
Slightly off topic. But on the Berkano thread you mention buying a 8400GS card. What brand was it? Does it indeed do everything? As my existing card won't work with vdpau I need to buy a new card but from reading the Nvidia forum it looks a real minefield.So if your new card works I will get one too - assuming of course I can get it here (I am in the UK). |

I got this card and I love it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121235
Its works with all Blu-Ray video, it's silent, it hasn't caused a heat problem, and it's very cheap. VDPAU even fixes judder and deinterlaces!
By the way, if you're looking to upgrade your storage the Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives are awesome. I just got one and it's so much faster than my Seagate 7200RPM. |

Thanks for the link.
I have tracked it down and ordered one.
I have recently increased my storage (by 2 x 1TB drives) so your suggestion came too late but I will keep it in mind. |

The card duly arrived and installed. However tests were dire! With 1080p videos there was bad tearing, stuttering and VERY high CPU usage.
Reading through the Nvidia forum thread it seems that the problem is having composite enabled in xorg.conf (which I had). I removed it (and installed the latest xorg-server, 1.5.3, while I was at it) but found that even without the explicit composite enable in the conf file composite was still being installed:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is
(II) NVIDIA(0): enabled.
(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce 8400 GS (G98) at PCI:2:0:0 (GPU-0)
...
(II) Initializing built-in extension COMPOSITE
Something else is causing it to install by default.So far I haven't figured out how to stop that.
Can you post your xorg.conf file and/or did you do anything special to get it to work?
TIA |

I don't have access to that system right now but I know I did disable the composite extension. I know I made my xorg.conf as minimal as possible. I removed DRI and I only load 3 modules I think. I'll be able to get more specifics in a week or so, but I recommend chopping your xorg.conf file down to the bare minimum and then adding things back in once it's working if you need them.
Could there be a USE flag somewhere causing the trouble? |

Worked out a fix to stop composite loading:
"startx -- -extension Composite"
I lose my nice KDE4.1 desktop effects but it is worth it. The card is impressive. |

Hi,
This would be better suited in the doom9-forum, but I have to wait five days after registration before I can post there, so...
I think I trashed my GGC-H20L. Tried to apply the 1.03 patch from doom9-forum with the patching-tool under wine. It does 'something' for about 20 secs and then fails with:
Code: |
Updating was failed. Please repeat that. (Error data = 70 00 04 00 00 00 00 10 0A 00 00 00 8F 81 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 )
|
After the failed process it's blue light flashes in a constant rythm.
After a restart it makes no 'bios'-noise and no light - it always identifies itself (in Gentoo and the flashing prog) as
Code: | D: HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW GGC-H20N COR4 |
At the end I've tried in windoze: same error as mentioned above.
I've tried all available versions 1.02/1.03 of official and patched firmware. No success.
However I can bring it into so called 'safe-mode' if I hold the 'eject'-button at startup - it changes nothing though.
Has anyone had something like this? Do I have to trash it - oh man, it is still brand new
Any help much appreciated! |

I updated my script to rip dvd's to the newest version. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-5284163-highlight-.html#5284163
Now has support for dvd chapters in matroska container and enters a sensible movie title tag. Will have subtitle support when I find the time. Or feel free to add it if you have experience in subtitle ripping. I can implement the muxing, but I do not have a clue how to get the subtitles to disk atm.
I am working at a more complete version of my hd-transcoding scripts at the moment (including DVB-rips and hopefully m2ts directly). So standby for more convenience. _________________ Video Encoding scripts collection | Project page |

While there is not much news from the doom9 front, I finally remembered to post my script for streaming Bluray and HDDVD playback using mplayer, dumphd, aasckeys and libbluray.
I know, I promised this long ago but then I forgot about it. Took some time to make this work usefully too.
What it can do:
Mount a Bluray or HDDVD disc and determine the main movie, then play it via dumphd (needs to be installed with aacs and bd+ support) directly streaming over a buffer to mplayer.
Note that there is no guarantee that it will work for you. Especially the autodetection of the main movie on bluray discs is far from perfect.
Most of the script was made by a friend who knows his way around the command-line.
You will need to emerge bfr. This is a little C-program made for buffering media streams.
The following variables will need to be adapted:
MEDIAROOT the path where your bluray drive is mounted
ASTREAMTYPE will be ac3 or mlp (must be adapted for bluray, autodetected for HDDVD)
AVSTREAM number of the preferred audio-stream from your disc/movie
DUMPHDHOME the directory where your version of dumphd (including libaasckeys and libbluray) is installed
You may want to adapt the mplayer command options too.
Code: | #!/bin/bash
AVSTREAM=2
DUMPHDHOME="/root/BluRay/dumphd-0.6"
MEDIAROOT="/media/bluray"
ASTREAMTYPE="ac3"
#===================================
while [ `mount -l | grep $MEDIAROOT | wc -l` -lt 1 ]
do
echo "Trying to Mount BluRay/HDDVD...."
sleep 2
mount /dev/cdrom
sleep 2
done
if [ -d $MEDIAROOT/BDMV/STREAM ] # then BluRay is mounted
then
MOVIE="BDMV/STREAM/`ls -S $MEDIAROOT/BDMV/STREAM | head -1`"
echo "Selected Bluray Mediastream: $MOVIE"
ASTREAMTYPE="ac3" # sorry, no autodetection with bluray
elif [ -d $MEDIAROOT/HVDVD_TS ] # then a HDDVD is mounted
then
MOVIE="HVDVD_TS/`ls -S $MEDIAROOT/HVDVD_TS | head -1`"
echo "Selected HDDVD Mediastream: $MOVIE"
ASTREAMTYPE=`ffmpeg -i "$MEDIAROOT/$MOVIE" 2>&1 \
| awk '/Stream/{ if ( $3 == "Audio:" ) { print $4 }}' \
| tr -d "," | head -$AVSTREAM | tail -1`
fi
echo "Detected Audio Stream Type: $ASTREAMTYPE"
AUDIOCODEC="ff$ASTREAMTYPE" # ffac3 or ffmlp
if [ -n "$MOVIE" ]
then
INFILEOPT="--infile:$MOVIE"
else
INFILEOPT=""
fi
(cd $DUMPHDHOME ; nice --10 ./dumphd.sh $INFILEOPT $MEDIAROOT) \
| bfr -b20m \
| nice --10 mplayer -vo xv \
-demuxer lavf \
-ao alsa:device=hw=1.3 \
-ac $AUDIOCODEC \
-lavdopts threads=2:fast:skiploopfilter=all \
-cache 8192 -autosync 30 \
-fs -fps 24000/1001 \
-aid $AVSTREAM \
-psprobe 1024 \
-framedrop -
exit 0
|
For all the scripting experts here - feel free to apply all the changes you think useful. I'm very well aware that this script is not perfect. |

Hi again,
I worked on my video encoding scripts lately and decided to make them available in one place.

Is there no way to decrypt blue ray on the fly, like dvds. |

There is a script I posted to decrypt bluray on the fly. You can also pipe the output of dumphd directly into mplayer if your computer is fast enough.
Have a look at my first posting - I linked all scripts and examplary commands there. |

Important update:
The processing keys for discs with MKB V9 ans MKB V10 are found. I can't link them but have a look at the doom9 forums to get them. |

I recommend you to have a look at the (HD) DVD & Blu-ray authoring section on the doom9 forums.
The main purpose of this thread is in decoding/playing bluray (and hd-dvd) discs atm.
I have not started research on the encoding toppic yet.
If you find some useful information please let us know. |

I added a small note to subtitles at the bottom of my first posting. If you want to convert the .sup subtitles in a .sub format that your player can use, check the linked doom9 thread.
This is not exactly news but I stumbled about it and thought I should add this info, since I had not mentioned subtitles in this thread before. |

Hi,
I have 3 questions
1. I just want to know which player can I use to play Blu-ray or HD-DVD and with which USE setting.
2. I have LG GGW-H20L, it's really necessary to patch my firmware if I want to play HD-DVD or BDR on gentoo?
3. And the last ^^, Is it really necessary to have BDVM ?
Best regards |

1. As software player I use mplayer with ffmpeg for demuxing (I don't know if other players are able to play the high definition file formats yet). You will need the latest version from the berkano overlay and the standard USE-flags including ac3, eac3. I'll check my USE-flags and post them here later, if needed.
If you have a nvidia video card capable of VDPAU, you should set this USE-flag too.
2. To use your drive in linux you need to patch it. The patch allows your aacskeys decoding software to talk to your drive without specific authentication. Since there is no licenced software player for linux (yet) this is the only way to decode your drive.
3. BDVM is optional as long as you do not want to play a newer blu-ray disc with BD+ encoding. This is the only way to decode BD+ discs in linux - and it is not yet working for all discs. |

Hi Tariella,
Thank you for your answer ^^. An another question , for the keydb.cfg, I must update all the time the file ? Or this is aacskeys program made it ?
Best regards |

The keydb.cfg file belongs to the dumphd program. There are two ways to obtain the disc's volume id which is needed for decoding the disc with dumphd:
The first and most simple method is to patch your drive and let dumphd use aacskeys for obtaining the volume id.
The only other method (for people with a drive that has no patch available) is to use the keydb.cfg file with dumphd. You normally won't need the file if your drive is patched.
If you chose this second method, you'd have to find the volume id of each of your discs somewhere on the internet and add it manually to the file. |
