Hi,

I have a leased line (64kbps) with a modem from ISP. I want to share that internet connection with 5-6 other computers. So connecting that modem with a router and connecting router to a switch will do that.
But, suddenly my router failed due to a power issue.

I'm planing to go with a software router which is much less and have much more features.
is it possible to implement a software router? My modem is Tellabs 8110 (STU160) with 25 pin serial interface.

Thanks in advance.

Asanka

yes, that is absolutely possible, asankaan.
the gentoo home router guide is a very good starting point for that.
what you need is iptables, that's for routing and firewalling, but you will want some other services too.
i recommend using net-firewall/shorewall, it is very flexible and comfortable.

Thanks for your reply.
Anyhow i doubt whether it will work for my case as i have a leased line with a different modem than an ADSL router.
do you have any idea about that?

Asanka.

If you can connect your computer directly to the modem, you should be able to use the computer as a router. You may need a 25-pin to 9-pin serial adapter, or a 25-pin to USB adapter, depending on what ports your computer has.

it does not depend on how you connect to the outer world.
since you said you have a leased line, i guess you will be using ppp.
this will give you a network device ppp0, and you will then route between ppp0 and ethx. that's totally normal.

64kbps is ISDN. Although you were a bit vague about the configuration of the ISDN terminal adapter. But the aforementioned gentoo home router guide will certainly give you a helping start. Report back here with any difficulties you encounter.

Indeed. 64kbps "Leased Line" is overstating things a tad

Cheers,
