Hello there,

I came across the term baselayout, usually followed by a number, a few times now and I haven't found any detailed description of that a baselayout might be.
Any help?

Thanks in advance.

In short, the package contains some basic configuration files and the core components of the standard Gentoo init model, as of version 2 the init model has been split off into sys-apps/openrc.

Moved from Other Things Gentoo to Gentoo Chat.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
Code:
/usr/share/baselayout/group
/usr/share/baselayout/fstab
/usr/share/baselayout/issue.devfix
/usr/share/baselayout/shadow
/usr/share/baselayout/passwd
/usr/share/doc/baselayout-2.0.0/ChangeLog
/etc/gentoo-release
/etc/networks
/etc/sysctl.conf
/etc/filesystems
/etc/protocols
/etc/hosts
/etc/issue
/etc/services
/etc/env.d/00basic
/etc/profile
/etc/modprobe.d/i386
/etc/modprobe.d/aliases
/etc/inputrc
/etc/shells
/etc/issue.logo

Ok, so, not quite a picture... :)

Ok.. so to sum this up, baselayout basically is a collection of blueprint config files that get used on installing?

Loosely, yes. It contains the most basic configuration files with sane default settings and, in versions prior to 2.0, the core of the init model.
