Alright so I re-installed gentoo today on my hp that has been out of comission for 2 or so years. The install went pretty well, I only have issues with 2 things though. Also note, I havn't used gentoo or any linux distro in quite some time so these might be obvious and I'm sorry.

1)I remeber when I used to run gentoo there was a nice bootsplash(like graphic like terminal), I thought I configured for this in the installation where it said to put it in but to my dismay its just the standard black screen. I searched bootsplash on the forums but all I can find is an outdated guide. How do I get bootsplash working?

2)When I boot up I get this message a lot of times:
Code:
One of the files in /etc/{conf.d,init.d} or /etc/rc.conf has a modification time in the future

Should I be concerned about this?

Thanks,
bladdo

1. using gentoo sources? gensplash is in there. Look up gensplash (bootsplash is the old name) Then read this wiki page.

2. Fix your date. Check to see if the output of the date command is accurate with your watch, for example.

If it's correct, your date was screwed up while you installed. That gets annoying - keep in mind that in gentoo (and *nices in general), major stuff breaks (and doesn't work) if files' dates are in the future. You'll have to fix each file by hand (or find a script to do it for you.)

If not, go ahead and fix it. Emerge ntp and use ntpdate to do it for you, or just set it with the date command.

Alright I fixed #2 but I'm going through the gensplash howto and it says to do ls -FFg /usr/src/linux and if gentoo-sources is in it, then you have the right kernel, I thought I used gentoo-sources but I get /usr/src/linux -> linux-2.6.24-gentoo-r4. Also I see later on in the guide it says to pass a theme via genkernel, but how do I know the name of the themes.

Thanks for you help,
bladdo

that's correct - you do have gentoo-sources.

The splashes themselves will be in /etc/splash - AFAIK, use the directory name in there.

emerge bootsplash-themes.
