This is a continuation of our discussion from thread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-689221.html
I think it is better (safer) to move this topic here.

The sample you gave is very good:
Code:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{layouts}

\begin{document}
\pagediagram
\end{document}

the only thing I didn't like is the dimension distance in "pt" which doesn't have much meaning. So I was looking through various tutorials and they are hard to read and not intuitive so I found few examples and start experimenting.
by adding to preamble:
\printinunitsof{mm}
and below begin document:
\pagediagram{\drawparameterstrue\drawpage}
\pagevalues

Code:
\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{article}
\usepackage{geometry}
\usepackage{layouts}
\printinunitsof{mm}

\begin{document}
\pagediagram{\drawparameterstrue\drawpage}
\pagevalues

\large
a buncha
stuff

\begin{equation}
\sqrt{\pi}
\end{equation}

\end{document}
This converted the dimensions from "pt" to "mm" as it is easier to work with "mm" and a caliper. I was checking the distance accuracy and it is very good.
The reason I need the dimensions is that if I work with a form I usually take a ruler or caliper and measure the distance I need to move the text. I will start working on my check this week and for sure I'll have plenty of questions. :-)

That's cool. I hadn't yet figured out how to get layouts to print the actual dimensions. The code you gave above caused two page diagrams to be be drawn. I removed the \drawpage and now just one diagram appears:
Code:
\pagediagram{\drawparameterstrue}

I also use a ruler for for moving things around.
