Detected file collision while emerging coreutils-6.10-r1

Hi all.
I'm having some trouble emerging sys-apps/coreutils-6.10-r1 .

Code: Select all

checking 291 files for package collisions
 * This package will overwrite one or more files that may belong to other
 * packages (see list below). You can use a command such as `portageq
 * owners / <filename>` to identify the installed package that owns a
 * file. If portageq reports that only one package owns a file then do
 * NOT file a bug report. A bug report is only useful if it identifies at
 * least two or more packages that are known to install the same file(s).
 * If a collision occurs and you can not explain where the file came from
 * then you should simply ignore the collision since there is not enough
 * information to determine if a real problem exists. Please do NOT file
 * a bug report at http://bugs.gentoo.org unless you report exactly which
 * two packages install the same file(s). Once again, please do NOT file
 * a bug report unless you have completely understood the above message.
 *
 * package sys-apps/coreutils-6.10-r1 NOT merged
 *
 * Detected file collision(s):
 *
 * 	/usr/share/locale/vi/LC_TIME/coreutils.mo
 *
 * Searching all installed packages for file collisions...
 *
 * Press Ctrl-C to Stop
 *
 * None of the installed packages claim the file(s).

Code: Select all

 # portageq owners / coreutils.mo
None of the installed packages claim the file(s).
As I don't completely understand why this is happening I probably shouldn't file a bug. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Some more info:

Hi.

You get an error because coreutils wants to install a file that's already on your system. In this case, no other package claims to have installed it.
The quick fix is to rm /usr/share/locale/vi/LC_TIME/coreutils.mo and then emerge coreutils.
Jorge.

That fixed it, I can't believe it was so simple. Maybe that message could be a little less confusing :)

oi ;)

I'm also faced with this problem.

Code: Select all

* checking 221 files for package collisions
 *
 * package sys-apps/coreutils-6.10-r1 NOT merged
 *
 * Detected file collision(s):
 *
 *      /usr/bin/arch
 *      /usr/share/man/man1/arch.1.bz2
 *
 * Searching all installed packages for file collisions...
 *
 * Press Ctrl-C to Stop
 *
 * None of the installed packages claim the file(s).

Going to try to rename those files and try the isntall again, any other suggestions?

I'll post the result soon.

thanks in advance.

Which package owns these two files ?
Paste the result of portageq owners / /usr/bin/arch /usr/share/man/man1/arch.1.bz2

Hi ,
i did that, the output was something along the lines of "no package had ownership of the files" or similiar.

So it's safe to overwrite the two files.

Delete them (make a backup before) or turn off collision-protect feature.
Then reinstall coreutils.

FEATURES="-collision-protect" emerge -1 coreutils should be ok.
