Hi guys,
There was talk earlier about checklist being put together for people who would like to test the beta to ensure that you guys receive relevant data.
I am not a subscriber to the releng mailing list but I was looking through the archives and could not find anything regarding that.
I was wondering if you guys have put that together, if its only available through the mailing list, or will it be posted here as well on the forums?

Chris (wolf31o2) said he'll work on it tonight.

All of the PPC stuff has been merged. If you want ppc32, download the ppc64 ISO and use it. There are both 32-bit and 64-bit kernels on the same media.

Same here.. i went *No.. nooooo.. NOOOOOOOOO! Oh wait.. err, >_<*

Didn't expect this beta to be out this quick tbh, releng team must be going crazy on it :) What's the ETA for the FINAL after a first BETA, normally? Or is this a "It's ready when it's ready"-case? Starting to think about telling that laptop company to work more slowly on the one they're building for me.

Geez! Can't wait for the release! :D

EDIT: First off
  • No bootsplash (yup, I miss terribly these little eye-candies ;-) )
  • No keymap selection - had to loadkeys manually.
Tested against Athlon Amd 64. No issue.

I'm just excited about how 2008.0 bootsplash will look like. Gentoo's are improving and are impressive each release. I expect the next one to knock my socks off ;-) .

Considering what day it is, I'm surpised it doesn't have a Vista boot screen: .. I'm sure that would have really knocked your socks off.

Downloading it now :D

Ha ha... Sure, that'd even have been a reason to definitely drop Gentoo for, say, ever... ;)

The RPM thing didn't even strike me... Probably that joke firewall in my brain dropped the info... :D

I got a kernel panic with the amd64-liveCD. That was no surprise, the 2007 version always failed on this machine also (it would stall about half way thru the installation).

So now will try the 686-liveCD instead and see what happens. Will file bug reports as soon as I have enough information.

the 686 liveCD also kernel panics. Something about a bad init and failing to read the page.

Hi

I am new to Gentoo and would like some advice please.

I have just finished downloading the 2007.0 amd64 live CD & was planning on taking the plunge into Gentoo. The FAQ's seem to indicate that if I load 2007, then I will be able to update to 2008.0 by using- Code: emerge --sync && emerge -u world.

If this is the case I would prefer to go with 2007.0 as I have some time at the moment to install it.

Or is it better to wait until a stable 2008.0 is released?

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,

This isn't really the place to post this but....

There is NO NEED to upgrade in Gentoo. After an install you keep current with: emerge --sync && emerge -u world
If the 2007.0 boots ok and detects all your hardware (harddrive, cpu etc), go with it. No need to wait for 2008.0.
You'd be wasting time away from Gentoo which is a crime.

The balance between the 2008.0 beta and 2007.0 is between your bandwidth and your compilation time. Personally, I'd go with the beta. You'll spend quite a while compiling all of the programs that changed in the past year (pretty much everything).

Not to mention that some of those upgrades may be a bit . . . tricky. What was it, expat or something that was so much fun? I'm sure there are a few others too.

If you do use the old CD, upgrade portage first, check to see if gcc and friends need to be upgraded then do the world update. Save you some compile time.

Thanks dberkholz & Aad-Jan for the reply. Considering the few comments I've seen in this thread re problems with the AMD64, perhaps it would be better for me to start with a stable version and take it from there. That will probably be more than enough considering my lack of experience with the command line & internal workings of linux.

Thanks again for the quick response. :)

Not that it matters, but I ran first (earlier today) the 2007.0 minimal CD, switched to 2008.0_beta1 minimal CD, and started over from scratch, and at the emerge of gentoo-sources, realized there were no 2008.0-profile, tested one more time, same result, switched back to 2007.0 CD... As you probably can guess, things can get a bit heated under these circumstances ... But all is forgotten  Looking forward to the real deal later on !!

If you grabbed it before we announced it, you get to keep the pieces..

Yeah, I know, I think I wrote something about that ... I know I'm just to blame for jumping the gun too soon, still, and correct me if I'm wrong (since were about the pieces...) as the announcement went out, there were no 2008.0 profile.

gmtongar (and keeping the pieces :D)

Your early announcements in that other NEWS thread were just counterproductive.../me grins it has bitten you.

As a dev of course that is your privelige...

If you're refering to my announcement about 2008.0_beta1 not containing a valid profile, well, that bug was requested to be reopened this morning.

I have to underline that I am no dev, just a simple user who's enjoying Gentoo (by no means an expert, and probably never will be), but grinning/laughing at user(s) who in a polite manner (perhaps also a bit frustrated) are pointing out what could be considered a bug, may be pretty close to shooting oneselves in the foot.

... and for the HDA/SDA announcement... what can I say, we all make mistakes... Haven't we all made them?
