I get this on my Blade1000 (750MHz, 1GB Ram, 18GB HD) when i boot the live-cd 2004.2 64bit on it. Any suggestions?
And the same with the older 2004.1...
Further testing with an appropriate Freebsd5-iso shows the same problem (don't worry, i would prefer Linux/Gentoo  ).
But Solaris 9 and 10 running fine on this machine, so i think, the hardware is ok.

I haven't seen that happen booting from CD, but then I haven't tried 2004.2. I did have that error with a particular version of SILO booting from the HD. I thought it was fixed?
Anyhow I had to downgrade my SILO. I had to boot from a LiveCD to emerge a version that worked. Sorry - don't recall the relevant versions but plenty of people had the same problem. The answer shouldn't be too hard to find... |

I have same problem 
On my SunBlade 1000 (1024MB RAM and 36GB HDD),
Gentoo 2004.2 can't boot, saying "SILO Fast Data Access MMU Miss".
But Solaris 8 (10/01) works well on this machine... |

oh well..
this is perhaps a bug with the livecd 2004.2
i load silo on the 2004.1 cd and then i insert the 2004.2 cd and start gentoo kernel.
well.. :p

As i wrote above, 2004.1 gives the same error (and as i didn't expect - *BSD do not support UltrasparcIII!)
Should i try the older Gentoo 1.4 CD? Where can i get this?

ok, the only thing that works is the Aurora 1.0 cd (even Gentoo 1.4_rc5 didn't work! And yes, i tried it with slow down the speed to 4x while burning the iso.). But the big problem ist that i can not stop or break it's installer nor switch to a Gentoo cd at it's SILO-Prompt.
No ideas? I can't believe this...

Hi.
Today I challenged to install Gentoo using 2004.1 SPARC64 LiveCD.
Enter disk to optical drive, and type
Then I got same error message, "SILO Fast Data Access MMU Miss" 
Also I tried command, but the result was not changed.
I have no idea to boot LiveCD... |

i had a similar error attempting to boot a gentoo cd on a blade 100. i was getting the fast data access mmu miss becuase of my dvd drive. evidently the block size for the device is different (as i recall). once i swapped the dvd drive with a regular cd drive everything worked. again, if this is waaaaay off base then i'm sorry.

I work on a Sun Fire 280R and am experiencing similar problems as noted in https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59308.
I get a "Fast Data Access MMU Miss" message as soon as SILO is displayed. I have tried 1.4, 2004.0-2, and none work properly. The most luck I've had is with 2004.1, which displays more of the SILO banner up to, but not including, the boot prompt. Then, FDAMM shows.
Also, I have not had any problems booting Solaris, Aurora, Suse, or Debian from CD. Currently, the machine's running SunOS 5.8 without a hitch. So, I'm pretty certain any hardware or recordable media issues are ruled out.
I would install another distro, but I really want Gentoo. Any ideas? It seems a fair amount of people have this problem but there is no definitive solution to it... |

As i wrote above and other people had to find out, several iso's did not work on sparc. But with this solution i was finally able to install gentoo:
1.) Find the image "gentoo-sparc-1.1a-r2.iso" on the net and burn it. I got it from here: http://ftp.hol.gr/mirror/gentoo/releases/build/1.1a/
2.) Boot this cd and at the silo-prompt insert the new gentoo 2004.2 cd, then type:

/boot/gentoo-2.4 initrd=/boot/gentoo-2.4.igz root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc looptype=zisofs loop=/zisofs cdroot

This boots the gentoo-cd and you can start the installation as usual.
After bootstraping, emerge system & world (and two days later) i have now a cool system (Kernel 2.6.8.1/GCC 3.4.2 and CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=ultrasparc3 -mvis"), which is a lot faster then Solaris!
Note: the emerged silo 1.4.8 is also not reliable, so i overwrote it with the silo-version and the "/boot/*.b" files from the old cd and now everything works fine.

I have problems booting from disk too with SILO. (Posted in another thread.)
My system is a SunFire V210.
I can boot from CD-ROM (1.4.4 2004.2) and run kernels and gentoo
off harddisk but I can't get the disk SILO to work (and I have run
silo -f etc). I get to the part when it says ..remapping the kernel...
normally after a couple of seconds you will get the "Booting Linux"
message but this doesn't happen.
Workaround - install SILO 1.3.2 on the disk - it manages to boot
2.4 and 2.6 kernels (so I think my /etc/silo.conf and /boot/*.b stuff
must be correct - once I switch back to 1.4.8 it doesn't work anymore.
I got SILO 1.3.2 from Aurora. |

The machine had two drives in it. When it was running on the Solaris drive, I looked at the second drive to verify that it didn't have any data I wanted to keep. I have pulled out the Solaris drive and put the second drive in its place. The firmware knows the drive is there because it complains that it cannot boot from the drive (but I haven't done anything other than just plug in the drive in place of the Solaris drive).
What do I need to do to get it to see the drive?

I have a Blade 1000 with the same problem. As it turns out, the default Gentoo boot kernel on the CD does not have drivers for the Qlogic ISP2200 card in the Blade 1000: it's a fiber-channel interface, and the drivers I tried on the boot CD just don't work.
I eventually plugged an external SCSI hard disk into the SCSI interface on the Blade, installed Gentoo to that, then compiled a custom kernel that had the Qlogic 2200 drivers built-in. Once I rebooted onto the SCSI disk with the custom kernel, it found the fiber-channel disk, and I just copied the partitions over to the FC disk using cpio/tar.
If you go this route, one word of warning: when installing using this method, your internal SCSI disk will be seen by the boot-CD kernel as "/dev/sda" since it's the first SCSI disk in the system. When you reboot with the new custom kernel, though, the internal FC disk will become "/dev/sda" and the SCSI disk will become "/dev/sdb"! If your /etc/fstab file refers to partitions on "/dev/sda" at that point, you will be unable to mount root, and will have to reboot to the boot CD to fix it. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

At his point you can follow the gentoo installation documentation. Chapter 2 says you have to load hardware modules manually, particularly for sparc.
The fc-al driver is not included directly in the kernel, but provided as a module.
You have to load it by:
check it with dmesg.

Odd. I could swear I tried every module with 'ql' in the name and nothing would load and find that disk, but perhaps I missed that one somehow. My bad.

Thank you! That got it for me. Is this (or any other hardware-specific quirks) documented anywhere? I saw the bit that talks about using modprobe and gives an example for a network card, but there's no pointer there to additional info.
Also, does the install process add a qlogic entry to modules.conf? If not, how do I specify it when adding it myself? (I've done a lot of RedHat installs on i386 -- 6.2 thru Fedora 2 -- but my only experience with sparc is RH6.2, and I have no experience with gentoo, and this is my first encounter with something like this....)
