When we said "soon," even we didn't realize how soon it would be. 2008.0_beta1 is here. Your support and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated—thank you.

You can help make 2008.0 amazing! Test out this beta and report any functionality issues you encounter. Since this is the first beta, we're looking only for bugs in functionality, not bugs in appearance such as desktop backgrounds or other artwork. We expect to release a second beta once your testing has helped us fix problems with this first beta.

A migration to RPM was carefully considered again for this release, but in the end we decided to wait for the few remaining RPM-using distributions to migrate to the superior packaging format of ebuilds.

Get 2008.0_beta1 from the usual places.

Geez! Can't wait for the release! :D

EDIT: First off
  • No bootsplash (yup, I miss terribly these little eye-candies ;-) )
  • No keymap selection - had to loadkeys manually.
Tested against Athlon Amd 64. No issue.

I'm just excited about how 2008.0 bootsplash will look like. Gentoo's are improving and are impressive each release. I expect the next one to knock my socks off ;-) .

What, I don't want to spin again in RPM dependancy hell. April 1, yeah.

My intention is not to be bitching... but...
Is it possible the release was too soon?

File bugs, please. Release Engineering will NOT be searching the forums for this stuff. If it isn't in a bug report, it won't get to us and it WILL NOT get fixed.

This thread (or any thread) will not be monitored for issues that people are having. If you run into an issue with the 2008.0_beta1 media, file a bug in our bugzilla here. That is the only place they will be seen.

Should we file a bug with everything we have noticed each or one bug per issue?

It's a beta release. What were you expecting?

Well, as you raise the question, I do think a valid 2008.0 profile could be expected even for a beta release. I think that could be fair. But on the other hand, I am not a developer, so my expectations could of course be out of bounce.. or sync... or whatever.

I know you're working hard on this. Still, I think it was right to give this feedback. If you feel I was out of line, I will of course apologize.

Great !!

... and for any bitching, my apology ...

Not that it matters, but I ran first (earlier today) the 2007.0 minimal CD, switched to 2008.0_beta1 minimal CD, and started over from scratch, and at the emerge of gentoo-sources, realized there were no 2008.0-profile, tested one more time, same result, switched back to 2007.0 CD... As you probably can guess, things can get a bit heated under these circumstances ... But all is forgotten  Looking forward to the real deal later on !!

Having USE flags is the very feature for which I use Gentoo. They reduce binary dependencies. It's silly of the LSB to require RPM as the package format (as well as the init scripts). Why does the LSB even care? This is something that should be left to the distro. We want our ebuilds. No RPM crap please - there is Ubuntu for those who love RPMs. ebuilds can handle RPM distributed files just well. No problem for Gentoo.

Yeah, I know, I think I wrote something about that ... I know I'm just to blame for jumping the gun too soon, still, and correct me if I'm wrong (since were about the pieces...) as the announcement went out, there were no 2008.0 profile.

Ubuntu does not use RPM.

Or perhaps PPC (32 bit) just isn't one of the architectures for the beta release.

Very funny... My blood started to boil when I read about the RPM format. :P Always keep forgetting about April's Fools Day. :P
As for the beta, no issues on my side for now. :)
