Okay, this might be a dupe, but since the search sucks so much, I can't find it. I did come across (a while back) bugreports/etc. wanting this feature, but I know a quick-n-dirty way to do it.

HowTo Have portage download packages while compiling, or "do both at the same time":

1. Figure out the emerge command you want to give. For example, pretend that you want to emerge -uDN world

2. Give the fetchonly version of that command to emerge. In this example, it would be emerge -uDN --fetchonly world.

3. Switch to a different terminal, and do the regular command, in this case emerge -uDN world.

The beauty of this is that there are no modifications, and if the compiling emerge reaches a package before the fetchonly emerge has downloaded it, it politely waits, saying that it couldn't get a lock on the lockfile. After it's done downloading, both threads continue as expected.

I just discovered that this was possible, and it truly has saved countless hours already.

Hey poly-poly man,

It used to be that if you added

Code:
FEATURES="parallel-fetch"

into your make.conf file, then that would do what you want. I've got a funny feeling that not to long ago, this feature was enabled by default and now happens automagically.
