These are the only configuration changes required to get my VMware to print. It took me a year of fiddling off and on to find the shortest route.

Step One:
Change the .vmx file, mine is VMware_for_Accounting.vmx
# USB settings
# This config activates USB
# Turn it off to work through samba
# NEVER turn on with samba !!!!
usb.present = "FALSE"
usb.generic.autoconnect = "FALSE"

Step Two:
Edit the file /etc/cups/mime.convs then cp mime.convs local.convs
########################################################################
#
# Raw filter...
#
# Uncomment the following filter to allow printing of arbitrary files
# without the -oraw option.
#

application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 -

Step Three:
Edit the /etc/samba/smb.conf
[printers]
comment = All Printers
# The following line is a REQUIREMENT for printing through VMware
use client driver = yes
# DO NOT CHANGE THE ABOVE LINE !!!

Step Four:
/etc/init.d/cupsd stop
/etc/init.d/samba stop

Step Five:
/etc/init.d/samba restart

I have XP running on VMware-player (the free one). I only installed the minimal windows drivers for the printer on the virtual machine running XP just like you normally would. In the end it was an incredibly easy setup. The /etc/cups/printer.conf file had been modified for my printer but the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf remained unchanged. Samba and hplip were just straight installs.

vmware-player-2.0.2.59824
hplip-2.7.10
cups-1.2.12-r5
samba-3.0.28
