How do I get old ebuilds? I'm using "~x86".

I want xdoclet 1.1.2, but only 1.2_beta1 is available. So how do I tell portage to keep old ebuilds for a while? Or how do I get them back?

I have no idea, but I've hoped someone would start the opposite of "Break My Gentoo" to salvage old ebuilds, maybe "Save My Gentoo"??

Im dreading the day the nvidia 1.0.3 files disappear...

NB: Of course, you could save the files somewhere & stick them in /usr/local/portage & adjust your overlay dir in /etc/make.conf I'm talking more about an organized project than doing it yourself...

Also, there are reasons ebuilds go away... security flaws with old software leap to mind... also, not everyone keeps old source files around, so it would be hit or miss...

Chill, we use cvs for revision control, all deprecated ebuilds are still available, including all revisions ever made to them.

Users can use cvsweb to get hold of old versions/revisions, and check changes that have been made. Hint: ue the attic feature.

Yes, CVS is good for that, but it would be nice to have a switch (off by default) for rsync to not delete old files that are no longer on the rsync server. Does someone (beside carpaski) know if that is possible already with a variable or so ? If not maybe I should write a patch ...

Dont bother, its would be a oneliner, (conditionally remove the --delete option from the rsync command).

I dont see any purpose for this, why would anyone want deprecated ebuilds except in exceptional circumstances or checking revisions, which is what cvsweb is for.

Well - how about when you use a programme that isn't in portage which depends on a version of a programme that is in portage, but is deprecated?

True.. didnt even think about this... really, I was being tounge in cheek anyways.. I've only have one use for a non-current ebuild, and that was NVidia drivers on my laptop... in any case, I backed up the ebuilds to my network... no biggie...
