I've been trying to get X working on my laptop for the past few days now - but I've had no success, so I'm hoping someone can help out. The searching I've done hasn't really helped, as most people seem to be getting different problems to what I am. The FAQs and HOWTOs don't seem to cover my "no devices found" error, so I figure I'll take the step and make a post.

Anyway, here are the particulars:

And now, to my problem!

Argh! So, xorg doesn't even start! Here's the relevant section of my xorg.conf:

Any ideas?

Your chip is supported by the open-source radeon driver, not ATI's fglrx driver.

Wow, you nailed it in one. I think that "n00b" title I have is deserving. :)

I did the following:

  • rmmod fglrx
  • emerge --unmerge ati-drivers
  • removed "fglrx" from modules autoload and replaced it with "radeon"
  • replaced the "fglrx" in xorg.conf with "radeon"
  • emerged some radeon driver thingy. I can't remember what :/

And it works! Thankyou.
