Not sure if this should be in OTW, but....

I want to take a HD from my old computer and put it into this one. The old box had the harddrives show up as /dev/hdX, but this one has /dev/sdX. Is this a difference in the drives themselves, or is it just a different controller? I notice my new box has two of these:
Code:
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 2 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 02)
which I'm assuming is the harddisk controllers. The old box has the almost matching
Code:
00:14.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 10)
which is the only thing on that thing that looks like it could be anything to do with the HD's.

Am I correct in assuming I can simply move the disk from the old box to the new and it will 'automagically' work?

You are.

SATA drives (and SCSI drives, but you probably don't have one of those) drives would show as /dev/sd* (unless something's wrong with the drivers, which isn't out of the question).
IDE drives would usually show as /dev/hd*.

What should happen is that the drive should show up as /dev/hd[abcd] (depending on whether it's primary/secondary master/slave). It shouldn't show up as /dev/sd*.

With newer drivers SATA drives show up as /dev/sd*. My PATA dvd shows up as /dev/sr* - don't know if that is some kind of wonkiness with the jmicron drivers (reasonably new)

If you're using the libata drivers with PATA CDROMs, yes, they should show up as /dev/sr* just like any other libata device showing up under the SCSI subsystem.

I wanted to be explicit for this poster: this is not true anymore.
Depending on kernel version and how you build it.
On a new kernel, built *correctly, all hard drives should show up as /dev/sd*
This is a fairly recent change.

* I saw correctly, but perhaps that really just means, in the new and hip way.
