I'm using a Dell monitor and have configured XFree to use the refresh rates given in the manual, but every so often the monitor goes blank for a couple of seconds, this can be very annoying during games and the like.
I have a nvidia graphics card, all setup as per the guide as well.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?
It happens on my windoze installtion too.
Cheers. |

Corky,
When it happens, do you hear the monitor make a single click noise?
When the picture comes back is it both dim and over size, then gets brighter and smaller as it settlles in?
If you can say yes to one or both of the above, your CRT is suffering from 'flashover'. It will either clear itself or slowly get worse until it fails totally.

My advice would be to notch the rates down some (while making sure you can still reach your desired resolution) and see if the problem persists, then maybe you can determine if the monitor is bad, or just eliminate the problem all together as long as you're happy with the resolution.

Well, it doesn't make any noise at all, and there is no picture distortion before or after.
But I will try turning the rates down and seeing if it makes any diffirence.
Thanks for the help.

Changing the values doesn't seem to make any diffirence either, it's wierd, any other ideas on what could be causing this? The monitor is only a couple of months old so I can't believe it's on the way out just yet
The rates set are HorizSync 30-85, VertRefresh 50-160 |

Corky,
I'm glad its not a dud CRT but its under warranty anyway.
You haven't set the BIOS power save times to a very short time have you?
That could blank the monitor excessivly because it thinks the system is not being used when it really is. It would affect Windows and Linux.
