Which kernel should I use? I know that I need to use at least a 2.4.21+ kernel

I need hardware support for:-

1. Onboard firewire - needed for my ipod :)
2. Onboard Serial-ATA (only one drive attached so not RAID, just one plain s-ata drive).
3. uDMA 100 access for my normal ata drives.
4. usb2 for my mmc card reader - my girlies mobile phone has a 128mb card for her mp3's :)
5. Nforce2 AGP support for non nvida cards. (I'm toying with the idea of buying a Radeon 9600pro)
6. Spdif output. I'd rather steer clear of the nvidia driver, Is there any working spdif output from Alsa 9.2+? Alsa 9.2 nforce2 spdif output doesn't work :(
I've had all the above working on Mandrake 9.1 (minus the AGP driver + alsa spdif) with a cooker 2.4.21 kernel, but have now completely moved to Gentoo. The speed of my system even with the 2.4.20 gentoo kernel is amazing compared to mandrake 9.1!!!!!!!!!!!

So to sum up which kernel, what do I loose if I use vanilla sources compared to the gentoo ones? Should I go for one of the 2.5.X kernels? I've never applied a kernel patch either so this is new terratory for me!

thanks in advance

start with vanilla 2.4.21

get it working to your liking

then start playing with the others

I found ac sources worked well. gentoo is based on 2.4.20 :( but gss and others are newer.

always had problems witn 2.5.x
