|
|
After installing gentoo, both my dvd-drive and cdrw seems to have stopped working. The drives get detected by the bios and the system, but whenever I try to mount a cdrom, it says no media found.
Thinking that this was only a linux problem, I booted into Win2K. Then I have the same problem. Windows detects both drives, but it can't seem to read any cd's from it.
Anyone have some suggestions as to what may have happened? |

Don't know about the Windows problem, but if it worked before the Gentoo install, it should probably work after. Did you add yourself to the cdrom group in /etc/group? Try that to start. Did you put it in /etc/fstab correctly so it will mount? Mine looks like this:
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro,user 0 0
(edited '/etc/cdrom' to read '/etc/group')

If Windows can't see it either, maybe its bad. In my experience they go out more often than any other p.c. component (I've lost three cdrom drives out about ten machines over ten years). Try swapping a known good one temporarily and see if it works.
You haven't disturbed the cabling or anything, have you? That might also explain it. |

He meant /etc/groups
As for the "media not found" I have something funny. If I cdrecord an iso image, I cannot read that cd in the burner; it says "media not found." But I can read it in the dvd drive |

At first I thought I couldn't read anything in the burner. Then I realized I forgot to put a cd into it, doh! But yeah thankfully the burner seems to be ok.
It seems that it's time to go shopping for a new dvd-drive. And it was brand new, I only had it for about 3 years. Bleh and I was planning on replacing the burner instead. Can anyone reccomend a good dvd-drive for gentoo ?
Oh and thanks for the help. As always you guys come through |
