I am running xfree 4.3-r2 xfree-drm4.3r2 i don't have dri in kernel glxgears says i get 85k fps i get no errors anywhere but trying to run ut2003. glx is running and everything else seems to be running.

Hello

If you have 85fps in glxgears you have no hardware acceleration. Please post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log. And of course your system specs.

regards
Thomas

Try emerging ati-drivers instead of using that drm...Your video card supports it. UT2003 works fine for me with my 9800 pro

Hello

If you have 85fps in glxgears you have no hardware acceleration.

I do belive he said 85 k fps, e.g. 85000. Just to keep you from barking up the wrong tree ;) But trying ati-drivers could do the trick. UT2003 needs something called s3tc ( a texture compression algorithm) that perhaps the drm driver doesn't support?

Uh Uh 85000fps? :-) That would be a nice score.

@darkangael
What does glxinfo say about dri rendering? Do you have a section:

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

in your /etc/X11/XF86Config?

sorry it was 85.00 thought it was a comma... I will try the ati drivers but they don't seem to like me at all.. and dri is in my XFreeConfig

this is a mix of what the forums say and a first attempt at the ati drivers

i was also thinking of going from xfree 4.3 to 4.2 and using the ati drivers from their site?

would that work.

Thanks for all your help

posted all files. I have posted my specs, xfree config, xfree log, and the glxinfo files on my webpage at http://bioresearch.homelinux.org i think it will be easier to read this way rather then makeing this a really long thread.

I have tried the ati drivers and when i load the fglrx drivers into my xfree config they do not work as my Ati 9000 is made by Saphire and powered by ati. I am running the latest of Xfree and the latest of the ati-drvers i believe they are 4.3-rc2 and 2.9.13 respectivly.

thank you to all that are helping me.

Patrick

That shouldn't matter, AFAIK. I've got a Hercules 9800 Pro and it works fine with the fglrx driver, apart from a warning in the XFree log that it's a third party board. You say that driver doesn't work - what happens when you try it?

Your Xfree logs listed:
[quote](II) RADEON(0): initializing int10
(WW) RADEON(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(II) RADEON(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000
(WW) System lacks support for changing MTRRs
[/quote]

From this, it appears that you have not compiled MTRR support into your Kernel. You should use the options:
Processor type and features --->
<*> MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support
Character devices --->
<*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
[*] Intel 440LX/BX/GX and I815/I820/I830M/I830MP/I840/I845/I850/I860 support
// Enable your chipset instead of the above.
[ ] Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 DRI support)

Be sure to include MTRR as shown above. Also, choose support for the chipset on your MB in the `Character devices` section. You may not have the intel chipset on your board. Because DRM includes its own DRI support, you will *not* want to include `Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 DRI support)`. If you have compiled support for this, you should remove it so that DRM can install its own.

I hope this helps.

Code:

Section "dri"
# Access to OpenGL ICD is allowed for all users:
#    Mode 0666
# Access to OpenGL ICD is restricted to a specific user group:
    Group 27    # video
    Mode 0660
EndSection
is what i have regarding the question pointed at me.

I have a sapphire radeon 9700 pro, works fine with some fiddling round to get agp8x to work. I am using 2.9.13 drivers. The radeon 9000's should be supported also by xfree-drm if you have emerged that and should have no problem with agp8x as they dont support it ;).

One thing, are you sure you don't need to do something like opengl-update drm or something like that (I have never used the drm before) and did you compile the drm code into your kernel?

Few things:
First up, recompile your kernel with MTRR support. Do *not* include support for the AGPGART as suggested, exclude it entirely - the ati-drivers package supplies it's own agpgart driver, and this will conflict with your kernel one.
Next up, once your kernel is working, "#emerge xfree-drm ati-drivers" and run fglrxconfig again. It may need to update some things.
Once that's done, run opengl-update ati. Everything whould be going fine :)!

This is the procedure I followed for my powercolor ati board; I've been thinking about writing a HOWTO for some time... should I?

There have been a few HOWTO's written I think. The main problem is that there is no one way that works for everybody. People with kt400 and nforce motherboards have issues with radeon 9700 pro and agp8x (apparently I am one of the few lucky people to have a 9700 pro work in XFree 4.3 and ati-drivers-2.9.13). Also, the drm drivers may well be better than the ati ones (can't say for sure as they don't support r300) What is needed is a HOWTO that outlines ALL the methods known so far, which as you can imagine is a fair bit of work. There are a large number of posts on these forums (some are HOWTOS) which can help if you think you can spare all that time though :) If you want me to detail how I did mysetup let me know.
I have a sapphire radeon 9700 pro with kt400 chipset (epox 8k9a2+) on xfree 4.3 using 2.9.13 drivers. You will also want someone who is using the drm driver that comes with xfree-drm

Also be aware that there is still a problem with the ati-drivers causing freezing in some games (I get it in neverwinter nights and there is a command line option to fix the freeze in all quake3 engine games, just add "+set r_ext_compiled_vertex_array 0" to the end of the comand line). Don't know if this problem is unique to the r300 series, but they are our only source of drivers for r300 so far so we have to put up with it or find a way to disable the GL_EXT_compiled_vertex_array feature in opengl without breaking things.

(btw you don't need xfree-drm if you are using ati-drivers, the drm is a seperate set of drivers. You do need drm in the kernel though (NOT the dri drm, but the other one (there are 2 kernel options one on top of the other)

With mine, I used the kernel options I pasted from
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/dri-howto.xml
except that I have the ALI chipset on my ASUS mobo. This is not support for the AGP card, but rather the mobo chipset that controls the AGP. Though I may be mistaken, I don't believe that xfree-drm includes support for this. In any case, it does not conflict. My system uses hardware acceleration with that setup. This improved the performance of glxgears from 140 fps to 1200 fps
> glxgears
5080 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1016.000 FPS
6047 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1209.400 FPS
6047 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1209.400 FPS
6047 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1209.400 FPS

I also did not use ati-drivers as I am using an old radeon 64 DDR (one of the first radeon cards). xfree-drm builds the drivers for my card as I have set the USE variable to include "radeon". I also added radeon to /etc/modules.autoload because the module was not loading automagically. ati-drivers should only be used for the newest radeon cards that are not supported by xfree-drm. If you will be using ati-drivers, you will not use xfree-drm. You will use one or the other depending on which ATI card you have.

Xfree-drm includes its own dri so that you do not need (in fact cannot use) dri from the 2.4.x kernel if you are using xfree-4.3.x. If you are using the 2.5.x kernel sources, then you would use the kernel build rather than xfree-drm for xfree-4.3.x. xfree-drm exists because the 2.4.x kernel does not support dri for the current version of xfree.

If I am mistaken on any of this, I would like to know about it. I would love to see my old radeon 64 DDR run even faster.

I hope this information is helpfull.

ok I have done everything suggested. I have compiled MTRR support, that alone made my glxgears go up to 235 fps, nice. second i took out agpart and drm out of my kernel and emerged the ati drivers(2.9.13) i ran the config but when i start x it says that it's cannot int agp, I have posted the XFree Log on my site http://bioresearch.homelinux.org. Thank you to all how are helping me.

I am back to the xfree config that is on teh site as the one created by ati config isn't working yet.

go to this post and copy/paste the ebuild and patch that I pasted in on it. Put the patch into your portage distfiles directory as fglrx-glc22-4.2.0-2.5.1.i586-kt400agp3.patch and put the ebuild into your portage overlay directory or into your normal portage tree wherever the ati-drivers-2.9.13.ebuild file was and emerge it. This helped for me. I think it adds an id for the kt400

oops forgot to paste the link https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=410409#410409

Good to hear it's all going.

Sorry if I was a little misleading - I found that using the ati-drivers internal AGPGART, it gave me an FPS boost - but clearly you've found otherwise. I have a Radeon 9000 (R250, I think...), so yer.

And thanks for the anti-freezing thing, I get it all the time aye, even when watching damn movies. It pisses me off incredibly when it happens, and lately I haven't been able to ctrl-alt-f1 to a terminal to restart X... D:. Hope ATi fix their stuff soon...

Grrr @ ATi...

I'm having a similar problem with my ATI FireGL
Code:
$ ut2003
open /dev/dsp: No such file or directory
Couldn't set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual

History:

Exiting due to error

glxgears is slow. I seem to remember getting it going a lot faster a while back but I can't remember what I did.
Code:
$ glxgears
972 frames in 5.0 seconds = 194.400 FPS
1113 frames in 5.0 seconds = 222.600 FPS
954 frames in 5.0 seconds = 190.800 FPS

By the way I have an Athlon XP processor and nVidia nForce audio card. I'm currently using the linux-2.6.0-test9-mm1 kernel

Code:
glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: No
This says no dr but it looked like in /var/log/XFree86.0.log that it was loaded

Thanks :)
