PostPosted: Sat Jul 12, 2008 4:15 pm    Post subject: KDE4.1 rc/beta 3d desktop dead slow Solved: Was EXA Reply with quote

So I installed KDE with the help of layman+kdesvn-portage. And I am a 4.x newbie.

So, here it goes;
Install went well, no errors etc. I created a new user to make my mind up about 4.x.

But; the 3d desktop stuff is unusably slow. Obviously, I must have missed a setting in xorg.conf?
My box has only a built in G35, so I am not expecting wonders, but my old laptop has an 810 and was OK with kde 3.5 and beryl etc, so I figure at least I should get that performance. (Box has 9450 Quad core, 8GB, and velociraptor)

glxgears gives around 1550 FPS, not sure if that is good enough? xglinfo gives

This box is only a few days old, so possibly I have forgot something vital during installation.. :)
Or maybe this is a known problem. But the threads about kde4.1 are long and many for obvious reasons. Could not find anything obvious with search.

I have used KDE 4.0.x and 4.1.x with desktop effects a little and it was not slow on my machine. But I do have a much faster video card (Nvidia GLX 7950). From reports by others I have the impression that recent Intel video hardware with recent xorg drivers should be able to handle this nicely. So as you have surmised you probably have something mis-configured or perhaps have a driver version that has some issues.

The first thing that sticks out is that the GLX version is 1.2 and from following the xorg email list I know that recent Intel drivers support 2.x OpenGL. Second I thought that the more recent drivers were named intel and you are using

|-->Device "Intel i810"

but later I see

AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib64/dri/i965_dri.so

which I think indicates a somewhat newer driver. There are no X11 video drivers in portage named intel that I can find but it appears the the later ones used in the xf86-video-i810 ebuilds are the intel driver (the ebuild has a comment that the package should be moved).

What version are you using? Probably 2.1.1 since it is the newest that is marked as stable. I see from the log that you are using EXA and I know that version 2.1 had some performance issues with EXA. You might try unmasking something newer since I know they fixed a lot of problems (including many of the EXA issues) and also improved OpenGL performance a lot in the 2.2 and 2.3 series. The newest in portage is 2.3.2 and it went in less than two weeks ago.

Also it looks like these drivers have a use variable to enable dri. So make sure that you are using dri with this driver (from the log it looks like you are).

Thanks!

You helped me to solve the problem by questioning/highlighting EXA (which I have no idea what it is!). By searching the forums, I found a couple of people having a setting in their xorg.conf;

Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"

By adding those into my xorg, I get smooth wobbly windows and the rest.

Edit: by the way, I'm using
x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810-2.3.2 USE="dri -debug"

Glad I was able to help.

I am not an xorg expert but I do know that EXA and XAA are acceleration methods and that EXA is newer and will eventually replace XAA. Existing drivers are being converted from XAA to EXA at this time. At some point XAA will no longer be available but first the drivers need to get EXA working correctly and until that happens many of the drivers still support both. Some newer drivers like the Nouveau and RadeonHD drivers only support EXA.

From following the xorg email list I thought that the newer Intel drivers (like 2.3.2) had the issues with EXA sorted out. Perhaps it would be worth while to open a bug report on your driver so that the specific issues get fixed (one may already be open but who knows). I know other drivers are also having issues that are being exposed by KDE 4.x. For example the nvidia drivers with NV5 (8000 and 9000 series) GPUs have very bad performance with KDE 4.x and to some extent Qt 4.x that are now coming to light. Perhaps the EXA issues you are seeing with KDE 4.x are new and unreported.
