hi everybody!
now that i'm on holiday i experience some problems in using my modem on a sony vaio laptop.
as far as i know its a ac97 modem and i used the "hcfpcimodem-0.99lnxtbeta03042700.tar.gz" from http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hcf/downloads.html
after some time i got things working with the hsfconfig utility but pppd call *** just gives me a "pppd: in file /etc/ppp/options: unrecognized option ' /dev/ttySHSF0'
so, /dev/ttySHSF0 doesnt exists - so i tried a mknod /dev/ttySHSF0 c ...
also doesn't work.
BTW, is there a driver for 2.5.74 too?
Any sugestions?
thx eule |

eule,
Last time I used the hcfpcimodem drivers was at home with RH9.0. I didn't use the rpms as they weren't out yet so I used the tar.gz like you have. After a quick look at the README/INSTALL files I just did a make install.
It then loaded up all the drivers plus made a /dev/modem link which worked great.
Some things to check: Are the modules being loaded up for you? try /sbin/lsmod to see if they are. If not you'll have to make sure you can load them up and then add appropriate lines in /etc/modules.autoload.
Hope this helps.

thanks for your answer - but i did everything you said and it still doesn't work..
for now im not really sure if its a modem that this driver supports at all...
a dmesg shows some errors that this might be a lucent or a silicon laboratories...
i tried serveral drivers - but none of them worked...
hope someone has some hints...
thanks,

eule,
You can tell what modem you have by looking in /proc/pci
If it is a lucent modem you can get the latest drivers here: http://www.heby.de/ltmodem I used these when setting up gentoo on my Dell Inspiron 8100 with built in modem.
Hope this helps,
vector
edit: these drivers get setup similar to the others _________________ "Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself."

hi again...!
cat /proc/pci is not very useful - at least to me:
it tells:
Modem: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Mo (rev 2)
I/O at 0x2400 [0x24ff]
I/O at 0x2000 [0x207f]
the driver you used i allready tried - but i had no luck...
thx for your help!
ciao eule |
