Hey,
I had the pleasure of installing gentoo on a beast of a machine last week.. for the purpose of game servers for WALAN
Dual P4 2.4Ghz Xeon with H/T (2 physical cpus and 2 virtual)
SATA RAID 0
and 2GB of Ram
now.. since this was a significant step up from my normal machines that I configure kernels for.. the kernel ran and detected multiple cpus so I thought all was good..
until people started to run servers...
6 Half-life servers and 2 Wolf:ET servers .. the games started to lag out
upon further inspection... only 900mb of ram was detected and cpu usage was WAY above normal..
is there some things I should do while configuring the kernel next time the lan occurs? |

Hi
1. For the memory try to enable high memory support in Kernel.
2. I had abnormal cpu usage with my SATA Dirve. It worked in PIO mode(-> SLOW & high CPU load).
Use hdparm to see if the dirve works in DMA mode. |
