I am having a lot of trouble compiling KDE4. I wouldn't make mention of it if it was just one package, but it seems that one in every 3 or 4 packages fails to compile. No info is given except the source file that fails... and sometimes it says as much as something like gcc segfaulted. Packages like kdebase and kdenetwork fail like this. I am using gcc 4.2.2. What I am trying to figure out is whether I am running a ~x86 gcc, or if the problem is in the KDE4 packages I am compiling. One solution that was proposed for an earlier iteration of this problem was to emerge kdebase, then emerge kdemeta. I was able to emerge kdebase's dependencies, but I cannot emerge kdebase. Any ideas what the issue is, and how I may resolve it? I am using the Portage version of KDE4, not the SVN.

You need to first compile qt and kdelibs with all the correct deps and USE flags, and then kdepimlibs before kdebase will compile. I'm not on my kde4 svn box right now, or I'd post them. Read the overlay readme's and Docs. IIRC, these docs are a bit out-of-date and leave out a few USE flags needed, like opengl, gif, png, jpeg, and exiv2 for kdemultimedia. xcb was needed for another package- I forget which one at the moment, and there may be a few more.

Again- very important- if you don't have all the USE flags and needed deps right as mentioned above, kdebase will fail.Next time I'm on the other box (later tonight probably), I'll post back my package.use file that works for me.

EDIT: Here's my /etc/package.use file for svn monolithic, but I see no reason they should not work for 4.0. You'll need to just use the same USE flags for the specific packages in your 4.0 package.use file.
Code:
# KDE 4 SVN ebuilds use flags
x11-libs/qt:4 dbus debug qt3support zlib gif jpeg png accessibility ssl opengl
kde-base/kdelibs:kde-svn debug opengl alsa semantic-desktop
kde-base/kdepimlibs:kde-svn opengl alsa
kde-base/kdebase:kde-svn debug opengl xcb
kde-base/kdeadmin:kde-svn debug
kde-base/kdeartwork:kde-svn debug opengl
kde-base/kdeedu:kde-svn debug
kde-base/kdegames:kde-svn debug opengl
kde-base/kdegraphics:kde-svn debug opengl exiv2
kde-base/kdemultimedia:kde-svn debug tunepimp opengl

kde-base/kdesdk:kde-svn debug
kde-base/kdetoys:kde-svn debug

kde-misc/konq-plugins:kde-svn debug
kde-misc/extragear-plasma:kde-svn debug

Should I use the svn and debug flags? I have no idea what debug does, but I am using Portage.... will the SVN flag help/hurt in this case?
