Just for the records (for those who don't listen to #gentoo-desktop-effects) : The patch from http://rafb.net/p/TsDkYP54.txt works for me.

Modifying ebuild and adding --with-pic to configure is solving the problem but I'm wondering what is wrong with my setup (~amd64) :(

You've got some strong LDFLAGS, you may want to remove the strip-debug and as-needed to see if it helps
Quote:

-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--hash-style=both -Wl,--sort-common -Wl,--enable-new-dtags -Wl,--strip-debug -Wl,--as-needed

Strip-debug is implemented by the package managers anyway, so its redundant.

Same here. EXTRA_CONF="--with-pic" emerge blabla helps. That should be enabled by default, for amd64 at least.

BTW.. LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--hash-style=gnu -Wl,--as-needed" :)

Right, and enable-new-dtags is default on Gentoo's binutils.

And what's the point of --hash-style=both anyway?

Even binary packages don't have issue with a pure gnu-hash system :)

Hi. Nice work.

If your interested I have some ebuilds that I've recently put together for Cairo Dock. Development has recently re-started on this docker, it's a little less smooth that kiba, but it's interesting (especially if you want a vary much more Mac-like docker  ).

http://cairo-dock.vef.fr/index.php?lang=english

They're a little hackish (loosely based on the kiba ebuilds as a starting point), but they build fine on two different systems here. Let me know if you're interested :)

Hi,

got back to Gentoo after I changed my laptop and I have some issues I cannot find answer to... :)

Prevoiusly I had an i915 graphic card and I used AIGLX, but nov I have ATI and I believe I should have a XGL installed... I added the desktop-effects overlay
Code:
gentoo ~ # layman -l
* desktop-effects           [Git       ] (source: git://git.overlays.gentoo....)
gentoo ~ #

but it cannot find xgl package:
Code:
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "xgl".

Compiz-fusion built fine, but I xgl wont... Any ideas?

Code:
gentoo ~ # lspci | grep Radeon
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS485 [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP]
gentoo ~ #
gentoo ~ # glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
gentoo ~ #

Thanks,
brm

What ATI card have you got? It is possible to us AIGLX with the latest fglrx drivers so there is no need for XGL.
Cheers,

Wojtek

[EDIT] Sorry - I just noticed you posted some info on your card. Seems like you should be able to use either fglrx or opensource ati-drivers - both of which provide AIGLX support.

Hi,

thanks for your time.

I have tried also with AIGLX, but I receive the following error:
Code:
gentoo lib # compiz --replace ccp --loose-binding
compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
[1]+  Done

According to wiki guide http://gentoo-wiki.com/Compiz-fusion#.22GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap.22_or_.22No_GLXFBConfig_for_default_depth.2C_this_isn.27t_going_to_work.22
I have also created the links:
Code:
gentoo lib # ls -l libGL.*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 705 Feb 22 10:54 libGL.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  35 Feb 22 10:54 libGL.so -> //usr/lib64/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  37 Feb 22 12:03 libGL.so.1 -> //usr/lib64/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  39 Feb 22 12:05 libGL.so.1.2 -> //usr/lib64/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so.1.2

But it didn't help...

I found also one solution to use LD_RELOAD and xorg-x11 opengl:
Code:
gentoo lib # LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/libGL.so:/usr/lib/libpng.so compiz-start
XGL detected
Using GTK decorator
compiz (core) - Fatal: No GLXFBConfig for default depth, this isn't going to work.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
gentoo lib #

Any ideas?

Found also this in logs:
Code:
gentoo lib # grep -i aiglx /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(**) Option "AIGLX" "true"
(**) AIGLX enabled
(EE) AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed (/usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
gentoo lib #

Maybe this will help also:
Code:
gentoo lib # glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
X Error of failed request:  GLXBadContext
Major opcode of failed request:  142 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request:  5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)

Hi,

Having used Fluxbox for the past few months solid (wanting to go the minimalist/fast approach), I decided to get my system running with all the eye candy it could muster. I've got compiz-fusion running fine, but I was wondering, what does this desktop-effects overlay bring to the table that's so great and bleeding edge? Why should I try it?

EDIT: Please note, I'm extremely new to eyecandy stuff and overlays themselves, so I don't even really know what desktop-effects is / has.

It gives you access to the "live ebuild", the development -9999 versions. You get the very latest feature as they appear in the code, but it can cause issues, sometimes the Dev's break things

Okay, just to get it to compile, I made a symlink from gcc 4.2.3 to gcc 4.2.2 (don't have 4.2.2) and it compiled just fine. The ebuilds have to be fixed or I wonder if its something upstream?

Maybe this will help also:
Code:

Hi,

found a solution - updated ati-drivers to latest unstable version and it works now with AIGLX - has some problems but it works... My colleague has the same laptop and he uses a XGL on Ubuntu and it works much better - so I would still like to try the XGL - does anyone has an overlay that would have a XGL?

With regards to my earlier post and the fact that some plugins weren't building I posted a bug upstream and this was their reply

You are trying to build a plugin that is using our universal Makefile. This
Makefile was build for normal Gnu make and may not work with the gentoo
specific tools. We will not support gentoo specific tools directly, but if you
find a way to make it gentoo emerge compatible, then provide a patch here.

Does anyone have a script to pull and emerge the newest 9999 changes of everything that is already installed? That'd be handy instead of searching through the layman directories to find those packages that need to be updated, and then emerging them one-by-one manually. (or is there an easier way that I don't know about? There is probably some portage trick for this i'd imagine)

edit: forgot to mention, I love you guys! this is so much infinitely better than the stock 6.0 builds its not even funny! everything generally updates and builds flawlessly... just has to be automated somehow :/

edit 2: sticky this thread to replace the "xeffects EOL" one if possible. Also, the wiki http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Distributions for distribution specific instructions needs to be updated to point to something other than the defunct xeffects wiki. If someone wants to write something about desktop-effects in the gentoo wiki that'd be cool.

I believe there are tools to spot 9999 dev version updates for subversion and even git repositories, but I don't use them myself.

You don't really want to update something if it's just had an extra comment added or something, it's impossible for such an update tool to know the difference between something that's worth updating for, and something that's not worth re-emerging.

I think the best way forward with "live" ebuilds is to just update once a week :)

Cheers,

Ormaaj, I use the following. You will need to adjust somewhat depending, your version of gcc (if you use 4.2.2, you can remove the ln -s and rm -f lines for the gcc). Also you may want to add or remove packages, I prefer to have the flat file backend so I skip the kde and gnome backend files.

Unstable version on amd64

ln -s /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.3 /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.2 && rm -R /usr/portage/distfiles/git-src && emerge --unmerge ccsm compiz compiz-bcop compizconfig-backend-gconf compizconfig-backend-kconfig compizconfig-python compiz-fusion compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported compiz-fusion-plugins-wallpaper compiz-plugins-screensaver libcompizconfig emerald emerald-themes fusion-icon compiz-plugins-freewins compiz-plugins-maximumize && ldconfig && emerge --oneshot ccsm compiz compiz-bcop compizconfig-python compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported compiz-fusion-plugins-wallpaper compiz-plugins-screensaver libcompizconfig emerald emerald-themes fusion-icon compiz-plugins-freewins compiz-plugins-maximumize && rm -f /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.2
