whenever i startx regardless of wm etc. the screen changes resolution about 6 times taking about 20 seconds before anything else happens. after that it starts up very quickly like it did on redhat b4 i installed gentoo. i tried using my XF86Config-4 from my redhat install which i had saved, but it does the same thing. I have also tried generating one with xf86config, with the same results. what are the things that this could possibly be. this is not a huge problem, as the system still functions fine, but it is rather annoying, and i would like to have it fixed

You can run "startx -logverbose 5" and take a look at the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file for any weird stuff happening.

You can also take a look at the xfree86 docs on your driver to see if you can disable probing for anything
