emerge python fails

Hi,

i'm trying to emerge python-2.2.2 on my gentoo 1.4_rc2 system
but I get the error:

configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create executables.

!!! ERROR: dev-lang/python-2.2.2 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 304, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed

In the config.log file i find:
Could not run/locate "g++"

I also tried with CXX=gcc emerge python but then i get the same
error about executables.

any hints, help, hands would be greatly appreciated

re-emerging gcc seems to have fixed the problem
