Hey everyone;

Background: Gentoo-sources 2.6.24-r8 kernel on a Compaq DL360 G2 rackmount server. It has a 4-drive RAID5 array hooked up to a IEEE1394 (FireWire) port, the four drives are /dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdc1, /dev/sdd1.

When a USB 2.0 hard drive was plugged in at boot, udev placed the USB drive at /dev/sdc1, FireWire drives at /dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdd1, /dev/sde1. mdadm had an aneurism and metaphorically exploded.

Is there a good, clean way to force udev to assign them the same /dev entries for these drives every boot? I have a feeling that it'll involve writing new rules in /etc/udev/rules.d

theholymac,

Usual practice is to rename the USB drive. Yes, you need a udev rule

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.
