I want to know who's using VMWare server over Gentoo Linux, and over what arch. I must point out that it's the STABILITY that matters here. Is there anyone who was able to get an amd64 arch rock solid under Gentoo yet? So far, I only stick to the i686 arch. I hope I will get interesting replies to this.

;-)

I have used VMware Server on x86 since it was in beta test and from what I can recall it has been extremely stable. I don't ever recall a VM crash that I couldn't attribute to a problem in the guest OS, nor any problem with the admin console GUI since the beta went gold. It's up to you whether this is "interesting."

Nice!! Thx for the quick reply!!! :D

So, *only* x86 is stable so far?

I am interested to know if it's worth it to do virtualization over other arch.

I have been using vmware-server since Dec 20, 2007 on amd64 (just checked my emerge.log). Granted this is not a long time. It seems stable to me, no crashes whatsoever with Windows XP 64-bit guest OS. Just a couple issues:

* I can not add a USB device for some reason, Windows will not boot if I add it.
* Audio doesn't sound so great
* Clock did not keep correct time until I checked a box to sync clock with the host.
* Many annoying messages to dmesg log that fill up dmesg buffer from vmmon device: /dev/vmmon[9273]: host clock rate change request 83 -> 1043

I suspect some of these would be issues whether on amd64 or i686.

I'm still quite pleased that I don't need to dual boot anymore. This is working well for my needs.
