so, the qt4 use flag was added to vlc.

i promptly activated it, but the interface was the same after the emerge.
are there no visible differences?

i tried to disable wxwindows afterwards, because i thought it overrides the qt4 option, but then i had no GUI at all.

It should...file a bug report. Maybe maintainers can sort it out.

The bug is, that VLC won't start up if it is compiled without vlm useflag.

USE="vlm qt4 -wxwindows" should work

No, there isn't, but maintainers know about it now and promised to look into it...so no need for a bug report.

Upstream got a proper ticket for this issue in https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/1431, should be fixed in next snapshot.
