I just tryed to emerge -U world, and I get the following:

>>> --upgradeonly implies --update... adding --update to options.
Calculating world dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 15) sys-apps/baselayout-1.8.6.8-r1 to /
...
gcc -o wall dowall.o wall.o
init.c: In function `init_main':
init.c:2439: warning: no return statement in function returning non-void
gcc -o init init.o init_utmp.o
* Please install sys-apps/gawk-3.1.1-r2 or later!

!!! ERROR: sys-apps/baselayout-1.8.6.8-r1 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 128, Exitcode 0
!!! gawk too old

now, this is rubbish because of:
* sys-apps/gawk
Latest version available: 3.1.2-r3
Latest version installed: 3.1.2-r3

any suggestions? :(

Remerging gawk should work, but I don't know why :) You aren't the only one who had this problem: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=62659&highlight=baselayout
