|
|
I have a Toshiba satellite Pro 6100 with the built in 802.11b radio.
The module for this 802.11b adapter is orinoco and comes up as eth1.
I have setup /etc/conf.d/wlan.conf to use
WLAN_DEVICES="wlan0 eth1"
SSID_eth1="some_SSID"
ENABLE_eth1=y
and a corresponding /etc/conf.d/wlancfg.some_SSID, which contains WEP keys, etc.
The problem is that when starting the PCMCIA services, it does not appear to use the /etc/conf.d/wlan* files for setup. I am using DHCP and so this times out without connecting to the access point and obtaining an IP address.
Just typing iwconfig eth1 shows the adapter but with no ESSID and a Nickname of "HERMES I", key encryption is off, etc. This appears to confirm that it does not use any of the wlan* files.
If I use iwconfig to manually set the SSID and key, it connects to the AP and if I restart eth1 then I obtain an IP address.
Using a secondry PCMCIA card (prism2 based), the wlan* info works great.
Anybody know what config files the orinoco drivers use?
I am using gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5 (with pcmcia disabled)
pcmcia-cs-3.2.4
linux-wlan-ng-0.2.0-r2
wireless-tools-25-r1
Thanks |

I didn't use wlan-ng for my orinoco. Just set up info for it in /etc/pcmcia/network.opts and wireless.opts, and used it as eth1 rather than wlan0 or anything. Made configuration a lot easier IMO. |

Thanks, I'll take a look at those files.
I need wlan-ng and orinoco because I have both a Prism based card and orinoco based card and use both for wireless scanning (Kismet). I'de hate to see what would happen if i threw my third card into the mix (Cisco).
I was just hoping for some consistency in the wireless setup, but it doesn't look like it is quite there yet. |

Consistency may be there and it may be quite possible to set up your prism card as net.wlan1 or whatever, but I had such a crappy time dealing with it I just went the the pcmcia-cs only way.
#gentoo-laptop on irc.freenode.net is a good resource for such things. |

I tried in both the /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts and network.opts and the card still does not read these settings. I confirmed that the card MAC address matches one of the lines in wireless.opts
Any other options before I go digging through scripts and try to figure this whole thing out? |

Can someone who is experienced write a howto for setting up a wireless NIC? (using pcmcia-cs, and without using wlan-ng)
everyone is saying setup your IFACE and config files, but no one has posted example of what they look like. |
