So as the subject says, what is your favourite quote? The real reason for this is I just put a quote into my .sig and this is basically a bad excuse to check that it works  - still this could be an interesting thread :D.

Edit: oh and look I just hit 400 posts - perhaps I talk too much . ;)

Here's one I got from a friend of mine yesterday...

Richard Feynman wrote:

I'm a quote type of person. I could probably post about a hundred that I really like.

C.S. Lewis wrote:
It may be possible for each to think too much of his own potential glory hereafter; it is hardly possible for him to think too often or too deeply about that of his neighbour. The load, or weight, or burden of my neighbour's glory should be laid on my back, a load so heavy that only humility can carry it, and the backs of the proud will be broken. It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you say it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all frienships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations--these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit-immortal horrors or everlasting splendours. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously--no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. And our charity must be a real and costly love, with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinner--no mere tolerance, or indulgence which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment. Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbour is the holiest object presented to your senses

One of my favorites is from the Proslogion by Anselm of Canterbury (11th century):
Quote:
For I do not seek to understand in order to believe; I believe in order to understand. For I also believe that "Unless I believe, I shall not understand."

Umm
Quote:

is actually taken from the poem "The Tyger" by William Blake (see my quote below). Check out the rest of the poem, it's pretty damn cool...

i have forgotten how it goes but something of "If everybody whould not care of anybodys else buissness, there whould be no wars" - from "War and Peace" i think by Tolstoy.
becouse, war starts when a large amount of people start caring for someone they dont even know.

its like "If everybody could just do their own buissnes"

A fitting quote when it comes to the "war on Terrorism" (please, don't turn this in to a political thread):

Quote:

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

some others:

Quote:

An adversary who feels inferior is in reality so.

-- Field Marshall Carl Gustav Mannerheim

Quote:

Only Finland-superb, nay, sublime-in the jaws of peril-Finland shows what free men can do. The service rendered by Finland to mankind is magnificent. They have exposed, for all the world to see, the military incapacity of the Red Army and of the Red Air Force. Many illusions about Soviet Russia have been dispelled in these few fierce weeks of fighting in the Arctic Circle. Everyone can see how Communism rots the soul of a nation; how it makes it abject and hungry in peace, and proves it base and abominable in war. We cannot tell what the fate of Finland may be, but no more mournful spectacle could be presented to what is left to civilized mankind than that this splendid Northern race should be at last worn down and reduced to servitude worse than death by the dull brutish force of overwhelming numbers. If the light of freedom which still burns so brightly in the frozen North should be finally quenched, it might well herald a return to the Dark Ages, when every vestige of human progress during two thousand years would be engulfed.

--Sir Winston Churchill

I have always loved that latter quote, for obvious reasons ;)

here are two that caught my attention:

Quote:
A computer scientist is someone who, when told to 'Go to Hell', sees the 'go to', rather than the destination, as harmful.
