Sorry for the newbie q, but I am getting ready to do Gentoo for the second time. The first install was just to play and see if it was better than LFS or Mandrake.
What are the benifits of GCC3? Any down sides? Will everything I use (gnome/kde, grip, mozilla, bitchx, etc...) work with GCC3?
BTW, this will be on a P3 850 laptop and the default 1.2 Gentoo worked with no problems at all... |

GCC3 is faster. There are threads about this. Most of your apps will work; some may not. There are several threads about this. The down side is that gcc-2.95 apps might not work. There are threads on how to solve this problem (easy to do). |

gcc3 optimizes better for your processor, it will result in a faster system. I built my whole system with gcc3 without problems. |
