XFCE4! Gtk2 based, much faster than Gnome.

How could that not even be an option!? :) heh

my suggestions

for gaming only:
fluxbox or preferably kahakai

for a media (gimp, blender, movies...) desktop:
enlightenment

for a full desktop:
kde

i use kde right now -- good candy, little hassle -- i have used many in my short time using linux... including e16.5 (brilliant candy, too much hassle), gnome2 (little candy, too much hassle), blackbox and spinoffs (nice eye-candy, not too much hassle, but little else) and the win9x wannabe... i forget it's name... (no candy, many bugs)

my favorite, as you can see from my comments, is kde... if you disable much of it's garbage (which isn't hard to do, easier than disabling windows' crap) you really end up with a stable, efficient, no-hassle de... exactly what i want... i'm not sure if you would call me a gamer tho... i love my games, classic vg music is my favorite musical style, but i do a heck of a lot besides... if it has to do with testing the limits of a machine and/or myself, i love to do it :p

Gnome... striving to be what a desktop should be, and getting there, albeit somewhat slowly. It's also gorgeous at times.

I don't have the patience for enlightenment (17), although I did run e16.

Well, to quote Port001 - Gnome "so cutting edge is hardly works". Really.
- Metacity breaksdown when I open MPlayer.
- Gnome-panel breaks down regularry (I've got used to this :D )
- gnome-terminal (I believe it is due to vte-hellknownwhatversion)
- and many more... but I love BreakMyGentooo

Gnome 2.2.2 rules my desktop. :D

I'm even considering to switch back to Metacity to get some better looking themes. Creepy, huh?

I love KDE, but will be trying Fluxbox soon, once my knowledge is up to par.

Fluxbox user here, although I have a lot of packages that depend on KDE and Gnome libraries(ie, I'm not using it for performance reasons or to have a really lean system). I like Flux because it stays out of my way like no other DE/WM I have ever used.
