First of all, I can see that this post is going to take a humorous turn - but let me preface this on a more Serious Note. I am an unemployed Network Administrator. I have been out of a job for a number of months, and the job market is just getting dimmer. I have been working in this capacity for a number of years, and I feel that I am competent and worth hiring. I love computers and have been programming (off and on, give or take a few years and a number of braincells) since I was 12. I love technology - I love cictuitry! I love the way it all communicates, it feels like clay under my fingers, but electronic - hence the move into networking. :D

The job market is worsening where I live. The number of college graduates here is steadily on the rise, so the jobs are paying less and less and the competition for jobs is very high (pacific NW US.) The state of affairs in the technology industry seems to be like a firehose left unchecked, spinning out of control and making a big mud pile. OK, maybe not that bad, but it sure feels like it sometimes.

I think I am going to bid my farewell to the corporate world. I am returning to the schools, there to be mired in years of endless research, experimentation, and financial aid. A number of years down the road, I will get grants to work on research and prove some theorem or another (or maybe invent an advanced superconductor).

Hence the question: what did you want to be when you grow up? Think about it - I always wanted to be an alien cow wrangler, but more realistically hardware - and the electronics behind it fascinate me. 8) Are you doing what you want to? Would the child in you want to kick the adult's you's ass?

Well, I want to rule the world ideally, but, failing that, I'd like to head my own company making something cool. I want to develop haptic/visual interfaces really. One day you'll thank me when you can immerse yourself in true VR and battle Orcs or whatever your pleasure. :-D

I voted for military. I always wanted to be in the Navy like my Grandfather (Pearl Harbor survivor), and my Uncle (Korean War survivor/Viet Nam survivor). Well, I made it. I retired from active duty Naval service in November 1992.

Now I'm working in the electronics field, doing something that I love.

Cheers,
RM

For the younger and those who still dream, what about an option:

musician / writer / poet / artist

et cetera

Personally I have no clue, I am a CS student but resent the idea of being a programmer stuck in a cubicle all day to some extent.

I voted for superhero. I figure I have as good of a chance as any of the options (as long as I'm sticking with my 'not growing up' policy). Since I'm not from another planet and don't work around gamma rays and radioactive spiders all day I think my best chance is to become a wealthy playboy and use my money to buy a ton of crime-fighting gadgets or to join an interstellar police force and be given a ring of power (Green Lantern-style).

I am already a software engineer. As such, I have my mind is already corrupted and therefore I cannot grow up to do any other job. Thus the only change I see in the menu is becoming a bum.

I went with computer software engineer. I've been interested in computer programming since I first started using computers. I've tried to think of what else I might want to do but haven't come up with anything.

Hi. I guess I'm one of those awkward people who changes their mind almost as often as their socks (yes, I put a clean pair on every day).

When I was a kid, I wanted to drive a big yellow JCB digger. Then I wanted to be an architect, 'cause I figured I could design buildings with secret passages like in all the kids books I read.

As I got a bit older, I got a bit more confused. I wasn't really much better in any one subject than any other, apart from English Lit which I only got a B in at GCSE. I always had a real passion for music but never wanted a job in music because, well, music jobs are generally quite crap (e.g. teacher, etc.) and I can't stand the pompus attitude of most people in orchestras, etc.

At A-level I developed a real passion for physics, particularly the weirder aspects and my physics teacher urged me to go to Oxbridge and do a physics degree. Didn't want to go to Oxbridge ('cause, once again, I can't be doing with pompus snobs) and, while I'd say physics was my favourite subject, I didn't see what the hell I'd do with a physics degree.

So I chose Electronic Engineering. What a great mistake that was. It was only when I took a year out between the 3rd & 4th years of my degree, working for an unnamed electronics firm, that I realised how crap and futureless any kind of engineering career is. The job you do on your first day is almost identical to the job you do on your last day, although you might end up with a few people below you :x

I guess I'm now more interested in business strategy, but, a year after graduation, I'm stuck with an MEng in Elec Engineering and no job whatsoever :-(

I guess I want to be a CEO. I don't really care for engineering at all, because I found there's very little real thought that goes into it, whether you're a mechanical, electrical, software, etc. engineer. You're just there to do someone else's bidding. You have no input in what the company should produce, where the company is going strategically over the next, say, 10 years. I'm very much more about ideas rather than getting things done. I'm also great at starting things and terrible at finishing them off.

Oh and I forgot to mention, I have the personality and work-ethic of an artist; I'm temperemental and can only get things done when I'm in the mood! My boss (who I hated) during my industrial placement openly said he just couldn't figure out how to motivate me. Hardly surprising, really, 'cause neither can I!

Damn, a simple poll question has turned not only into my life story, but a bit of a rant about my current predicament

I'll stop now :?

I was extremly fascinated by space as a kid and followed the Apollo program closely and ended up studying Math, Physics and Astropyshics.

Look at me now! Granted I live 30 minutes away from Kennedy Space Center, but I work in software and use none of my skills from my time at the University (not true, analytical skills learned during that time is used).

Besides, why do I have to grow up? I think I never will :)

If I were to go back to school today, I would study Philosophy and History, probably useless in real life, but it fascinates me more and more :)

I think ebrostig will have to prepare for a visit soon! 30 minutes you say!?

I'm 20 days from finishing my master thesis in astrophysics. I've applied and been accepted to a PHD programme, I just need to find some financing. I will work on gamma ray bursts and have a really good supervisor from germany (I'm norwegian).

I actually decided to be an astronomer at around 7 years old, never had a telescope and I was never "in to" looking at stars. I like to look at stars but only because they are fascinating objects. Practical astronomy never had my interest.

When I was 15, I had to decide between natural sciences and music, I chose natural sciences. At 18 I had to choose between astrophysics and computer science, I chose astrophysics. This is 6 years ago, can't say I regret my choice seeing how the computer world almost drowned 3 years ago and is only now starting to get healthy again.

If anyone can donate 3 years of PHD salary I'll dedicate my PHD thesis in their name :D

I see there are others in here that voted for astrophysics...are there any other "active" astrophysicists in here?

Yupp, about that, depends on the traffic I guess :) I can actually see all the launches from my office and from my house :) Really neat!

I have been to several launches, love the night launches of the shuttle :)

I voted for astrophysics since I actually studied it :)
Currently I'm mostly interested in extra-solar planets and general cosmology.

I'd really like to die... but this seems to take pretty long though... so I'm certainly going to be some kind of a Math teacher or Math-something before I do achieve my goal... ;)

May I ask what is your thesis?

I'm an astophysics student. One year from my B.S. degree. I spent three years at Florida Tech (ebrostig probably knows where that is) and decided to transfer. I loved the Space Coast and spent so much time at the KSC, but...it was something I had to do. Best decision I've made in my life so far. I attend Villanova University now. I'm spending this summer on campus working with a prof on a few CVs. I'm also working on a paper on Cyg X-1 that came out of research over the past year+.

You know, I don't really want to ever grow up either. I hope when I'm 60 I'll still be able to pick up toys and play with children.. The real world is encroaching upon my partying and my lackadaisical lifestyle, and, alas, "grow-up" is the only word for the transformation I must create in order to survive (survive=eat food, pay bills, feed cats, etc). Sigh!!!!

My girlfriend wanted me to vote 'superhero', and so I did. She's not a computer geek as me but she also dreams about being a superhero, more correctly, a wonder woman called 'Mums' (That's like Buffy with a twist.... that are able to fly)
